Hi all, hoping someone can give me some help in ripping DVDs to my Ipod. I have downloaded a free program but it seems to be converting them to English only language.
I recently retrurned from a trip to Japan- I stocked up on a heap of hollywood dvds with Japanese dub, keen to get my ajatt happening!
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I'm the kind of person who does this sort of thing manually, without automated tools. As such I probably can't help you too much.
But have you tried MeGUI? I think it can do this.

If you're on Linux, then dvd::rip is pretty good.

I use DVDDecrypter and MeGUI, though it's fairly complicated in steps.
Have you seen DVDVideoSofts stuff? I use their free Video to iPod Converter with my own profile for putting vids on my 5800, once you've encoded the dvd using something else it would be a nice choice for just scaling down for the iPod, as then you have a full version for the PC and small for the iPod.
I've not used Handbrake, though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried 'Handbrake' but this is what I used and encountered the language difficulty with- I couldn't see where to select different languages. When I viewed the footage as it was decoding it was all English.
I started over again using DVD Decrypter, which is great as it gives you the chance to select which language you want, but this makes it a two step process. I had to then use a converter- I tried one called 'Videora' but it stopped at 99% of the conversion process! I had a go at just dragging the almost complete MP4 file into iTunes but nothing happens.
Man, this is frustrating! I will have a go with megui, thanks again.

The problem with handbrake for now is that it is not able to include the subtitles as softsubs. If you want subtitles, they are hardcoded into the videostream. But its no problem to use multiple audiotracks and I heard softsubs could be enabled in the next version.

Since I want Japanese subtitles on everything I burn, the hardsubs don't bother me. Also, you can't switch audio tracks on an iPod, but you can on your computer, so if you want an English and Japanese version of the same movie, you have to burn two copies for your iPod.

If you want softsubs, rip the the subs separately with a program that does it. I think dvd::rip can do it. I think you can even use mPlayer with certain command line options.
