Post Your Recent Milestone Achievement Here

My milestone is realising that I can understand the grammar descriptions given by the KM2kyuu book, even though they are all in Japanese. I think I'm going to start using a J-J dictionary too.

Taking a test made for Japanese students (Business, Apparel Science, and Garment Creation)

I was a bit nervous during the tests but I didn't realize I was reading the thing normally. What the hell?

Well, I've finally got to 400 kanji. Woohoo :-)

Actually, I used to know 2000+, but that was when I lived in Japan more than 10 years ago.

Note to self -- NEVER stop reviewing the kanji again!

Finished "mining" my second show. It was the first episode of Rookies. Since the show happened to be 2 episodes in one, I stopped at the first hour since it was getting boring. It took longer than expected since I started activating words in the iKnow deck during this time.

So, that's now 500 sentences in my sentence mining deck (out of 1500 lines of dialouge). In the iKnow Core deck, I'm now up to 2400 words. Now to start "Last Friends" episode 1. I also have Death Note, 5cm per Second, and Hana Yori Dango lined up after that.

I'm wondering if calling this "sentence mining" is accurate. What I'm actually doing is translating the episode kind of, though fully understanding it is a better way of looking at it. Results continue as before in that I really like listening to the audio of these two episodes now. In addition, as these are dialogue intensive, I think its making my reading going of Harry Potter go smoother. Typing in the dialogue during reviews has improved my typing speed when chatting with my wife in Japanese on instant messaging.

Just finished the second compiled list of the KO2001 smart.fm group effort, that's kanji 91-180. If every sentence contained only one new word I'd be at 575 words now*, which is still mightily unimpressive! Big Grin

I hope I can finish KO2001 Book 1 till university begins at the end of September.

*since many sentences contain more than one new word (sometimes 3 or 4), somewhere between 800-1000 would be closer the actual number I think, which is not all that bad for little more than a month of study.

Congratulations Smile I'm not sure about the smart.fm lists, but the book itself has around ~3300 unique words I've heard. So thats probably a ballpark figure for what you'll know upon completion.

Thanks. Smile

Overall I think they are comparable. The grammar of the smart.fm sentences is simpler most of the time (but it does get a bit more complex in sentences for less frequently used words), the advantage being that they're often a lot shorter.

I use the smart.fm list in combination with the book anyway, whenever I add the sentences for a kanji I also read the sentences in KO, that way I've seen the word in two different contexts when I add it. If I really like the KO sentences I just add that as well, doesn't take long since you can just copy/paste it from the spreadsheet.

Past milestones: JLPT3, RTK 1, KO2001, 2.5 novels, write a short Japanese essay, read Japanese technical books.

Recently I did a phone call with a travel agent in Japanese, was glad it proceeded fine.

Well next I want to be able to talk without pausing much.
And also understand better of Japanese elder men's normal talking, often very unclear x_x

After adding a new Kanji into my SRS I then add it to a self made Kanji chart. Each chart is marker for 100 Kanji, and I just put up my third one. It's a great feeling to get to tape up a new one.

I read Harry Potter VII. This are more than 1100 pages with lots of weird kanji and new words. Fortunately also a lot of furigana which helped tremendously.

The story was new to me, I did not read it before in a different language. It took me about 3 and a half weeks (beside a full time job and normal family life).

Feel free to nominate me for the Hall of Heroes.

Today, the Ito sisters drove me 100km into the wilderness, where we did partake of 馬刺し (basashi).

That's raw horse meat sushi, y'all.

What the heck?! That's huge... so you've hit up like 5400 cards already? I'm guessing you deleted cards with nothing new to you along the way but man...

How has it impacted your Japanese? Are you doing production or recognition?

Respect.

Can't really call it a "milestone", per se, more like a sudden realization of how my skills have improved, without even noticing it until now. Also, I've just been in the zone lately, feels great! ^_^
