Struggling with the method

#51
No prob., am being good and not spending long on *this* forum. ^_^ GameFaqs on the other hand...

Doing Ok, anyway. True we'd better keep going if we can (can't concentrate on anything with a bad migraine though. The flashing lights, urgh). I kind of figure that retention rates will even out in the end, though maybe a day's break, as long as the reps get done, isn't too bad. Sometimes it seems to take a while for it all to sink in, yesterday I woke up and immediately recalled two of the Kanji I kept forgetting, as though my brain had been working on them without me realising. Weird.

More Kanjis!

This morning I added the 2042th card. So I made it one day earlier as scheduled. I'm relieved because there are no new cards to learn for the time being. Then again due to lack of reviewing the past days and my will to ruthlessly push through the last chapters expired cards have piled up immensely. Today I did 389 reviews of expired cards and there are still 1000 left. I figure as long as I review steadily it will even out.

About four months ago I started to learn kanji. Thus I learned ca. 17 kanji on average per day. The reality was that I slacked and caused myself unnecessary effort. In retrospect if I had studied 17 kanji a day, I would have had plenty of time to learn and review the kanji.

Anyway, I'm glad I finished the book.

Actually, your brain does work consolidating memories while you are asleep.

There are several studies about sleep and memory, this is just an article I found by googling "brain sleep":

From Science Daily:

Quote:by showing the activation of areas involved in the processing of memory traces such as para-hippocampal areas, the study might point to the potential functions of sleep, in particular the increasingly well-defined role of sleep in memory consolidation.

If any of you are struggling with "the method," then I recommend RevTK Lite.

I did this after 1100 cards, and I am much happier not to review so many rare kanji while I'm learning how to read and write the simplest of sentences.

Pokemon Platinum, mostly, I should really have known better than to have gone near that geme, considering the addictive factor, but my nostalgia lured me back when I heard they were remaking Gold and Silver. Also Valkyria Chronicles, since I bribed myself with a PS3 as a reward for finishing (will use it to play Japanese games on).

Anyway, congratulations on finishing! The reviews may be heavy at first I guess, but it'll even out, and you'll have a good start to Japanese. Well done.

I've been taking it more slowly again, since the reviews were just too much, and were starting to set my bad wrist off again, and have been looking at the language more, going over what I learned in class. Will finish soon, though.

I was thinking of getting VC. I played the demo. But then I played the folklore demo and couldn't get past the second area in the game. I am now playing Chocobo's dungeon on the wii. This plays very much like a handheld game, its very weird.

Is it easy to play Japanese games on an English/UK PS3 etc?

amber

p.s have you seen there are some japanese vc manga on the manga helpers web site?

Thanks, Ampharos64. I stick to the reviews and hope to see you soon in the "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. Since you are already into the language I imagine reading the kanji in context must have a reinforcing effect. Every time I see kanji on a website or in a movie I try to remember their Heisig keyword. Many keywords I can't figure out but I would know the kanji to the keyword.

The last chapter told me about kanji to come. However when you go into Japanese text you'll inevitably encounter besides Heisig's keywords dictionary translations in English and Japanese. My question is how are you supposed to memorize kanji beyond the first book without confusing different translations? Do you still make mnemonics in your further studies or do you just -- understand new kanji?

AFAIK, PS3 (and PSP) doesn't have any region protection for their games, so you should be able to play right away. Getting hold of the games however might be harder. Playasia atleast doesn't export to Europe, because Sony has threatened them (but for some reason it's ok to export to the US?). I have been looking into getting a console for playing Japanese games, but the others have region encoding, and Sony hate their customers.

I think PS3 is like the XBox 360. The console itself isn't region locked, but games CAN be.

Done. ^_^ Feels weird. I kind of miss it, already, though it'll be a while till they're all solidified.
Finally get to play that PS3, yay, Valkyria Chronicles is fun (thanks for the tip about the manga *gets* Oh, it has furigana, very useful)! Yep, it should be simple enough to play Japanese games on it (think you can import from YesAsia, and I suppose there's always eBay). Might torment myself with FFXIII when it's out, since at least there will probably be translations/summaries of the plot of that about, and I may learn something from the 0.000000000001% that doesn't go way over my head. From Valkyria Chronicles, I've learned せんしゃ (tank), which will doubtless be highly useful.

Reading the Kanji in context does help, though I can't always recall the keyword, either (equally annoying is when I can't remember the Japanese word).
I've added one new Kanji to my new Anki deck so far, 誰, 'who?' (weird that one's not a general use Kanji). Since it's in RTK 3, I used this site to find it, and used a mnemonic from here. Not sure whether or not to continue using mnemonics for every one yet, but may as well since I'll add them to the SRS anyway. I suppose if they don't appear in Heisig, I could put the Kanji, and a range of meanings, with examples.
Wonder what others do?

Sony BMG CD copy protection scandal
Quote:The Sony BMG CD copy protection scandal concerns the copy protection measures included by Sony BMG on compact discs in 2005. Sony BMG included the Extended Copy Protection (XCP) and MediaMax CD-3 software on music CDs. XCP was put on 52 titles[1] and MediaMax was put on 50 titles.[2] This software was automatically installed on Windows desktop computers when customers tried to play the CDs. The software interferes with the normal way in which the Microsoft Windows operating system plays CDs by installing a rootkit which creates vulnerabilities for other malware to exploit. This was discovered and publicly revealed by Mark Russinovich on the Sysinternals blog.

As much as I like the simplicity of clicking 'yes' or 'no' I contemplate switching to Anki as well because I could randomly add RTK3 kanji and I would be able to modify flash cards.

It might be that one day you won't need mnemonics anymore and you eventually start to think in kanji like I read in another thread. That would be terrific. Currently reviewing is still a chore for me but I have to focus on the big picture: Learning Japanese!

So far I've read many articles, forum posts, watched videos on youtube about learning the language. Moreover I sought for help in this forum. I thank you for indicating me the path to go but I've come to the conclusion that collecting information about learning Japanese is like watching a TV show: I gain more and more knowledge about that particular universe but in the end I'm a bystander. Therefore I will stop posting on this forum in order to overcome my procrastination problem and sharpen my mind.

So are we weird having a 360, PS3, Wii and DS? (we also have a dreamcast, PS2, gamecube, N64, PSone, and a few others that are from before my time). Don't you just see a game you want (or a few) and buy the console to go with it? Does fill up the lounge a bit though ;-(
