Retroshare F2F

#1
Could this be the solution to our copyright sharing problems on the forum? Retroshare, is like a mini P2P network, that only trusted friends can connect to. I guess you could call it F2F =D
It's even got messaging, and loads of other cool stuff. It even has a Japanese translation, so you can change the interface to Japanese if you like =D

I thought that it would be awesome if we could have network for the forum, where we could share stuff regarding learning languages. (Decks, etc)

Here's the link to the sourceforge page.
http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/

And heres an Install Tutorial
http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/wiki/i...tion_Guide

I have been able to try it out yet, but if any one wants to try it out I have a loads of files to share =D (though my upload speed isn't great but you'll get it eventually =D) If anyone wants to exchange friend certificates then send me an e-mail =D

Join the group to get some friend codes,
http://groups.google.com/group/rtk-share

Either send me or another member an e-mail or request an invite at the group page if your interested.

I think the main issue is having a separate forum to overtly *discuss* these topics--that is to say, a place for sharing links, questions and explanations about the materials, arguments about right/wrong, etc--without compromising this RTK/Japanese-learning forum and causing trouble for Fabrice.

There's the sharing of knowledge and the sharing of downloadable materials (copyrighted or otherwise). While there is a cross over there is no place on this forum to do both at the same time. This forum is primarily about sharing knowledge and experience.

So F2F why not, but I suggest to create an unofficial RevTK group on groups.yahoo.com or other equivalent, and discuss and exchange downloads there. If forum visitors want to keep a tab on those, I'm guessing there are RSS feeds on most of these services.

I would have no problem with occasional linking to this group, I think it would be better for this forum.

Okay guys I made a group for it.

You need an invite to join however, so send me an e-mail or ask someone else in the group =D

For everyone in the group, you need to post your retroshare friend code so we can connect to each other. Post them in the topic at the google group so everyone can add each other =D

This is working really well =D However there are still about half of the members still haven't posted their friend codes. It works a lot better with lots of people =D

Check out the new Opera Unite. Not sure how you communicate with it though, there may be chat plugins? But in the video it shows how anybody can share documents directly from their own computer.

Yes I thought about that too, it might be worth a try. It does have a chat feature.
The problem is that it doesn't let you create a network like retroshare.

Problem is the security. The files are hosted on the dropbox server, and I don't think they would appreciate us uploading tons of files that could get them in legal trouble. Also the limit is 2gb and I alone have WAY over that in files to share.

IceCream Wrote:* can you only share files with people who are online, given that its not hosted online?
* what about latecomers to the group? What if the number of people wanting to share gets pretty huge? Are people really going to spend a lot of time adding friend certificates for people they don't know?
You can start the download of a file just like a p2p app. If more than one persons has the same file, you can download from multiple people at the same time. As long as one person with the file is online you can download.

You only really need to add one person, as you can automatically add friends of friends, so as long as you add someone who has other people added, you gain friends from them, and gain friends from the friends you gained from them, etc.

iceCream Wrote:What does anyone think about, for new material made, at least, just uploading rapidshare, then posting the link on the private group? Seems more simple in the long run...
We'll probably end up doing that too. Things like anki decks are easier to share that way, but things like Tv programs, games etc would have to be constantly reuploaded.

Whats the sense of a F2F network when everyone is going to add everyone anyway? Why not use a normal anonymous P2P for example (e.g. GNUnet, that supports F2F too)?
Nevertheless a very nice idea, I am going to give it a try!

This is working quite well, however we have 86 members in the group currently, but only 3 or 4 people are regularly on retroshare =( Retroshare works much better with lots of people! Sharing lots files is much easier since you don't have to bother with uploading things and worrying about them getting deleted, and as more people download it, the easier the file is to download.

If you're having trouble then we have a few devs from the retroshare project who actually joined the group who would be more than willing to help.

I would.. but my DVD Burner is broken, so there's nothing I can share at the moment.

Well, in the meanwhile get connected anyway and download stuff from the others. Smile

How does Retroshare work?
Does it work like P2P (e.g. grabbing different parts of the same file from different uploaders)

If not, it would be quite a burden for uploaders with popular contents (or large files)

At least we have a place where we can share stuffs. (does not have to be limited to retroshar Smile

Retroshare is effectively like a P2P program. The difference is that it is completly decentralized and you only connect to your "trusted" friends. You can download the same file from multiple people so there is less of a burden on the uploader. Also if you also put the file in your shared folders you can share the file too.

The program is being actively developed and a few of the devs actually visit RTK Share, so if you want a certain feature you can ask them there too =D

Yeah, you don't have to use retroshare (though it would be nice if more people did), you can upload files to filehosts and post the links too.

Anyone here use "Share" the japanese p2p app? I have a 1188 line nodes.txt file if anyone wants a looksie... (I'm using a script to scrape the newest nodes and add them, so there will be dupes)
Hopefully thats ok with the forum rules, I think sharing a nodes.txt is like linking to http://groups.google.com/group/rtk-share Smile

Yeah more nodes/peers == more results == more files Smile
Also better speeds because different blocks of files are cached with different nodes.
I never really liked share, but I'm downloading crows zero 2 now, and the speeds are pretty sick..
Oh, and the source of the files is japanese people instead of american/european release groups (like most of the torrents we have access to are), so there are high probabilities of DVDs having japanese subs + the occasional japanese dub
http://pastebin.com/f6b86963f
If this is against the rules, mods/admin please delete only this post.
I guess if we all share our ids, we'd have access to each others files (so will other ppl too, so its no longer a darknet for better or worse).
edit: Heh, this is yet another suggestion as to what software to use for p2p, great huh..

Yeah, it is fast =D I've downloaded 100 episodes of Keroro Gunsou in the past 2 days (2 14gb rar files). Thanks for the nodes, I'll post mine too.

*edit*
Ah, how to I get a list of my nodes?

Check out your nodes.txt file in the same directory as the share exe.

In the Nodes tab I clicked the Encrypt address button and then encrypt in the popped up dialog box. Gave me http://pastebin.com/d5fa8820f
That seems to be the encrypted address that, once imported into share, will allow people to connect to me. Smile
