well first of all i'm kinda new here... i mean new to everything SRSing, RTK and stuff i'm new to all of those... hmmm... where do i start... Well i found out about SRSing from AJATT and i found out about AJATT from some manga forums... So from AJATT i got anki and from anki i ended up here... Well when i got here i always see this RTK stuff and i can't seem to get any information about it... So far i got 200 kanji in 5 days and with retention of 80+% i still think its bad... So i made this thread cause i wanna know about RTK... basically what is RTK? what can it give me? where do i read it? how long does it take for me to finish it? and stuff like that... so far i know those kanji but don't know how to read them but i do know what it means in english since thats what anki shows... i have so many questions in mind right now about this RTK stuff that i can't seem to remember them all.. so i'm ending my post here and hoping for some guidance from some senpai out there..

The Learn More page should answer your questions, biggest thing is to buy the book, try and use the affiliate links to help the site out.
How long it will take you to finish is a matter of personal opinion, for me about 4 months is enough time at a consistent pace, but that's no reason to say you can't get through it in a month.

Good luck.

You could, but really the book offers invaluable insight into the characters, without the book you learn nothing about Heisig's primitives, his fascinating stories and the wonderful introduction.
You can read a sample chapter here:
http://www.nanzan-u.ac.jp/SHUBUNKEN/publ...sample.pdf
It's not too expensive actually compared with most language books, and you get a lot for your money, it's invaluable even after you finish.

No, you need the book. This site is designed to supplement not replace the book. I recommend buying. It can be acquired illegally, but it if you can afford you should buy it because it is one of the most worthwhile purchases you will make.

to tell you the truth i'm just a 15 year old guy learning this kinda stuff and i don't think we have this book in our country and it'll be too expensive if i buy it online and i'm serious about it its expensive... let's say its 10$, 10$ is big enough here that i can live for five days with just it. imagine if its more expensive... that's why i' looking for alternatives...

After that if you are industrious you can do everything off of this site without referring to the book.

that's what i do. i learn from this site... from anki... wakan... and some other resources i have gathered... in my 2 months of study(not consistent) i've learned hiragana and katakana ,the basics of japanese sentence, particles, verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, negatives, and a lot more.. but i feel like i'm missing things if i can't read it
... anyway right now i'm editing my stories i just discovered it and making stories for all 200 O__O tiring job.. i hope its worth it...

ore_wa_ecchi Wrote:making stories for all 200 O__O tiring job.. i hope its worth it...Anything worthwhile is tiring, specially at first. Think about being able to recognise, draw and translate ( at least one basic meaning ) two thousand kanji a few months from now. Just don't get too tired, the road ahead is a long one. Some of the site's stories are very good, though making up your own stories usually makes them easier to remember. The book sample is very important. The remaining primitives you can kind of guess, though having the book is best.
Also, if you use Firefox, get the Rikaichan add-on, it's free and very helpful.

If you're near Manila, try libraries or ask relatives that have access to UST or UP library resources. Doubt National Bookstore would have it, special order maybe. Since school year started though go slow. Dahan dahan lang bata.

I am 1100 kanji into it, and only read the free intro. I notice in places I get frustrated because I am missing something that everyone else on the forum knows about. I am thinking about buying the book now, but figure I'm already past the most important parts. Bottom line: you can do it without the book, though it won't be quite as efficient.

I always feel a little unclean using this site when I read users insisting the book is necessary. The website itself has to carry on that little white lie for liability reasons but Geee, the guy is from the Philippines where it would take two weeks working at Jollibee (fast food est. in Phil.) to save up enough to buy the book on Amazon.

It's more the concept that's important although the book does help a lot and it's useful not to have to rely on having an internet connection all the time.
If you really struggle to find a hard copy of the book I'm sure you can find a torrent somewhere, although I really would recommend buying a copy, it's not going to be too expensive. Ask Santa.
