iAnki vs Anki Mini

#26
actually, iPods are almost impossible to brick, because they can be reset even if a firmware update fails. As far as I know, the hardware that handles an update is separate from the firmware.

re chochajin's comment, there's nothing vosmiura can do about that. It's a stupid limitation imposed by Apple.

EDIT: Oh, before I forget. I tried to google "jailbreak ipod touch 2g" and that's when all those horror stories showed up.
Could anybody link me to a "safe" site?

@vosmiura: Basically I love your iAnki, really, but I NEED more than one deck and more than just a few cards per synchronisation. That's all :/
It's called bricking, and it's always a risk when you mess with firmware. Same for DSes, PSPs etc. Basically, as long as you follow the steps correctly, a catastrophy has to happen for it to brick.. it's basically only possible for a few seconds and it only happens if your battery dies/runs out of power. Or possibly if your iPod hangs, which it really shouldn't unless it's already broken.
I almost bricked my Wii once, so be careful!

You can sync multiple decks.

How many reviews do you do per day?

I'm seriously thinking on buying an Iphone just because og anki. Does it work well there? Can I import from my stats from my computer? Is it easy to install?

Is it worth it? It would be really, really useful for me.

And does the Iphone have any other features? Does it play games (in japanese, preferably)?

It's very useful to have Anki on a portable device as handy as the iPhone/iTouch. I usually polish off the majority of reviews just on the way to/fro work, walking around, and other idle time.

There's lots of apps for the iPhone. If you don't need the phone features then the iPod touch is a cheaper alternative.

My mom told me she'd give me a new cellphone before going to college (college starts in september) and I'm only interested only ...oh shoot. I just saw its price...damn. I knew it was expensive, but not that expensive. 500€ the cheaper version!!! ;_;

I can forget it now. My mom would never buy me something that expensive.

I'll research on Ipod touch. I got my Creative Zen last christmas. Waste of money If I happen to buy Ipod touch. I actually wanted a new cellphone, but at the price of the iphone that's going to be (almost) impossible.

Aren't there any other portable devices that are able to use Anki?

I thought Ipod touch was an MP3 with other features, but it's actually a PDA. Oh great! This one I think she'd buy me, even though it's not a cellphone, well, I can use mine for some more time.

Is it possible to have Iphone stuff for free? Without having to buy them? I have no credit card. Anki is free right?

@vosmiura: I tried several times to sync 2 decks at a time and also posted in the "iAnki Update" thread about the error message I got.
I usually have to review about 150 cards per deck per day.

Oh, and I asked on the page before if somebody could link me to a "trustful" site where they give good instructions for the jailbreak of the ipod touch 2g.
If it's not allowed to post it here, then please send me an e-mail.

Thanks Smile

Anki on the Ipod touch works offline right?
I read something about safari to put Anki working...wtf is that?
It's for free right? Some of the applications have to be bought...

Ok, that's weird. My advice is to delete all the databases. They could be in a bad state.
First sync your reviews so you won't lose anything, then delete any database named iAnki-* in Safari Settings/Databases, and then also 'Clear Cache'.

After this select both decks in iAnki server with sync count set to say 200, and sync. If there's still a problem with one of the decks, I'd be interested in seeing it if you don't mind sending it to me.

@vosmiura: Thanks so much for helping Smile
I did exactly as you said and now it works without any problems Smile

I set it to 200 cards and review days to 1. Is that the limit or should I try to sync some more cards or some more days?

See for a normal working day that's enough, but soon I have a long, long flight and I'd love to have more cards to review then.

Actually I wanted to do the jailbreak today. Now, maybe I'll wait a little bit longer Smile

Thanks again Big Grin

EDIT:

@Jarvik7: Thanks, I've been reading threads about it for some hours now Smile

You could try more. I have 3 decks, 200 cards each, 2 days, so setting yours to 300, 2 days will probably work. See how high it can go. If you get an error, repeat the steps from before.

I'll try and let you know if it worked and how much I was able to sync in the end Smile
(Luckily both decks don't have any colors, special effects, media, audio etc., so I guess that helps keeping their size down.)

How do you guys deal with media in your deck? I want to try out iAnki, but I have plenty of dictations cards. Should I just change the model from "audio" on the question card to "reading" and then sync it or does changing the model frequently mess up some algorithm?

Could you please answer? My mom and grandma told I should buy the Iphone (well, because it's a cellphone and it'd be handy), hey'll help me. But It depends on there questions being answered.

Does it need the internet to work (anki, of couse)?

What Ianki and anki mini? What's the best?

Does it work as well in the Iphone as in the computer? Can I mainly use the Iphone anki to study?

CarolinaCG, it would be best to do some more research. I don't know how iPhones work in Portugal. You can find answers to your questions in this thread and searching the internet.

Both iAnki & AnkiMini can work offline.

You don't need to buy any extra apps. To use iAnki you need a wireless network. To use AnkiMini you need to "jailbreak" your iPhone. Read up about that if you don't know what it means.

Thanks a lot. I will. And already know what jailbreak is. And it's a big risk if something ahppens to the phone I guess.

So, Since I don't wan't to jailbreak the iphone, I'll just use iAnki.
Great...I don't have an wireless network, in order to do it I'll just have to go to my cousin's house. He has Wireless network. Well, but since I only need it to install and add cards...I guess it'll be fine.

I only find the iAnki website, the Anki issues community and links to this forum :|

You've helped me a lot (just to think that I didn't know what jailbreak was...s: ), so, thans a lot Wink

Ahh, you'll need to have a wireless network to synchronize your cards to Anki every few days.

Synchronize? When I use Anki on my laptop most of the times it doesn't synchronize. What's that for lol? Well, I'll be living near my college so I guess it won't be a problem.

I still don't know which Iphone to buy, is this new one 3G S is much more expensive then I'll buy the 3G instead. I hope Anki works in this one.

See, this is why this thread is so useful. And sorry for the noob questions, I kinda feel ashamed :|

Does AnkiMini work with 3.0 OS? I installed it through Cydia, and it doesn't load.

I've been fine just using the web interface, despite being a little funky at times. I really should try messing around with my phone sometime...

The web interface is the only interface AnkiMini has. The launcher icon is broken in 3.0 so just open the address manually and then bookmark it to your homescreen. I used SBSettings to hide the built in broken icon.
