2001.Kanji.Odyssey Anki deck with audio for all example sentences

It's not the same thing. You saw what vosmiura said. A great effort was exerted in the collaborated spreadsheets. Creating my decks did not take such long time. The Japanese text is in image form unlike the collaborated spreadsheets.

blackmacros Wrote:Here's hoping ahibba knew something like that and isn't kicking himself right now for wasting all that time doing it by hand
Am I crazy to edit the images individually by hand? Smile

I use something like xaarg's method. I'm not a programmer, but I taught myself how to automate things. I sorted the images into 2 groups: 6+ KB gif files are two lines, 5- are one line. Then I used a photo editor with some black macros Smile

xaarg Wrote:http://rapidshare.com/files/244399945/ko2001.zip (59938 KB)

It contains 3104 facts (book 1 and 2). The images without any readings are on the question side. The images with all readings and the English translation are on the answer side.
Thanks xaarg for reploading and creating the deck for the 2nd book.

I would be so grateful if anyone could upload the audio of the sentences that comes with the new e-books. Even if I can't say it's unfair for the people who bought the book instead of the e-book, I think that people who bought the e-book before the audio came out merely got lucky. If there had been any chance of getting the audio by buying the e-book back then, of course I would have chosen the e-book.
Sharing the audio with people who bought the book is no different than sharing the spreadsheet with other people who either own the book or e-book.
Both parties payed for the product but only one group got lucky to get the audio. It seems stupid to buy the almost same product again just because I'm in the unfortunate group of people who randomly picked the book instead of the e-book.

So, please if anyone could upload it to rapidshare or similar, I would very much appreciate it.

I agree, I can't seem to find a torrent anywhere =(

This is the Python script I used to create the Anki deck. I ran it in the output directory of the Perl script I posted earlier in this thread. Somebody with the audio version of the ebook might use them with slight modifications to create his own Anki deck with all the audio files included. With access to the spreedsheet you can even replace the images by the proper text.

If we can't get the audio of the sentences, the only option is to use Misaki to read them.

I'm trying to convert the images into text using OCR so it can be read by a TTS software, but I'll not upload it publicly so that no one will be annoyed!

When I succeed, I'll tell you so anyone interested in the audio send me a PM.

I thought I'd read somewhere on this forum that the audio ebook of KO2001 had been uploaded to a torrent site somewhere? I didn't bother searching cos I've got the book, but if you're looking for the audio you might be able to find it there.

Having said that, the audio has been really useful for me so far. The audio alone was worth the cost of buying the book. By pirating and inserting the original audio + sentence images you literally are replacing the entirety of KO2001. The spreadsheet project on the other hand can be defended as actually adding value to the product (I wouldn't have bought KO if the spreadsheets hadn't been made). Not trying to dissuade you or anything, but at least give a thought to donating something to Coscom because it really is a great product.

I remember reading that too, but I couldn't find anything when I searched... I'll keep looking =D

Filesize of 219.47 MB means it is the version without the audio for the sentences.

My audio book is around 680 MB in size. I just copied all of the files onto my HD so I could run it locally, so I don't know if this is how large the ISO would be (which is what the torrent is). But the torrent does show an image of the audio cd (you can see it written on there). A bit misleading.

I'm pretty old and not very computer literate to be honest, so I'd be grateful if anyone could help?!

I downloaded the file to my computer , now how do I open them in Anki?
#36
I don't think there is a torrent for the version with the audio for the sentences.

The 219 MB torrent is with audio for the readings and the vocabulary only, not for the example sentences.

If you unzip the file somewhere, you can open the .anki file with anki (right click, open with anki)

If you want to import it to your main deck, you can copy the files inside the ko2001.media folder to your decks media folder. Then to import the cards, open up your main deck and go file->import, then select the ko2001.anki file and click import (it might take a while), then you're done. It might be a good Idea to add tags to the KO2001 cards as you import them so you can delete / suspend them easily.

So you are volunteering for uploading the audio? I think we just need the folders "auex1" and "auex2". Wink

I've got the audio sentences but I'm really not sure about uploading it. Coscom put in a lot of effort to produce that audio for someone to yank it without buying a copy for themselves. With the audio sentences combined with these decks there would be no reason to buy KO2001 from Coscom.

That being said this will make one awesome deck that is going to save people a heck of a lot of time.

Yeah, but what about the people that have the book, but weren't lucky enough to get the audio =(

activeaero... I understand your hesitation. On the other hand, as someone who owns both of the paper books... it kind of sucks having no audio and not having any option to purchase it separately -- I would have to buy the whole e-book, which I can't justify.

And you are right, it would make one heck of an awesome deck!

Agreed. I spent more money on the books and didn't get the audio. Kind of lame, but I didn't know anything about the CD when I got the books cause they didn't have it in the bookstore I was shopping at.

Aha! Thanks for the quick reply bombpersons, didn't expect it would be that easy.
Works well, that will save me a load of time inputting the sentences manually.
Anyway, time for bed(Japan time that is...)

Thanks again!

I bought the books and then the audio. I'm not sure how it is "unlucky" to only get books when you only paid for books lol. Coscom is a business not a charity.

Fair call. I think I may have changed my mind, thanks! Smile

Any news on the audio? Is someone going to upload it? I don't want to import the cards until we have everything =D

This is all well and good as an exercise in programming/scripting, but let's be honest; it's bang out of order.
CosCom have put a lot of effort into their products and they are pivotal to many peoples journey to learning Japanese.
The deck that has already been made and uploaded here is already 'out there' now and will turn up on torrent sites and forums from now on, and to be honest it's more of an advert for the full CD that comes with the audio. I'm going to speak up and say that it should be left here; if you want the audio, buy the CD from CosCom and add it to your deck. An all inclusive deck will kick ass, no doubt, but it should be the privilege of those who have actually bought the product from CosCom. If you want it that bad, you should be willing to pay for it.

Of course some people will download this and not buy the book / ebook, but how many of the people who download this would buy the book if they couldn't download it? 99.9% percent of the stuff I download I wouldn't actually buy, so CosCom is really losing out as much as you say...

Besides it's all in the interest of learning, we shouldn't let old fashioned copyright law get in the way...

In Movie Maker Magazine, January 22 2004, Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has made the case that no intellectual creation is truly unique, and that everyone should purposely co-opt the preceding work of others. He has stated:

"Nothing is original. Steal from anything that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do, your work and theft will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable, originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery; celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean Luc Godard said: It’s not where you take things from, it’s where you take them to."

Copyright has never been of net benefit to society, and instead serves to enrich a few at the expense of creativity. For more information, read this:
