Anki iPhone app dropping soon - who's buying?

Damien,

I had a quick question. I don't have an ipod touch yet, but I want to purchase one for the sole purpose of this app. Is an 8gb itouch sufficient? Is there issues with slowdown? That's all I am looking to know! Thank you. (I am so excited to get this app by the way...)

It's a behemoth of a deck, coming at 45mb with nearly 11,000 cards, if that means anything to the performance.

It won't be as fast as a brand new 3GS, but it shouldn't be uncomfortably slow - I have a first gen touch myself. Better to ask someone other than the author, though :-)
I'm using a first gen 8gb- the only deck I've tried has about 3000 cards and it works fine. I occasionally get a little lag, but it's not bad at all. I haven't tried it with my media decks yet- once Apple sends out the new update resolve put out a few days ago, I can let you know.

Do realize the WWDC is just a few days away, they'll certainly announce the new iPhone, but phat chance they'll also update the iTouch. I'd wait that out before buying a new device.
well its too bad that i am a horrible impulse buyer and didnt read the advice to wait

im in the starbucks outside of yodobashi where i just bought it
Hi guys, just a heads up that Apple have approved the first update, so it should be available within 24 hours.
The new version (1.1) is on iTunes.

I downloaded it and tried downloading my media for my KO deck. It's painfully slow- mostly because I'm on a really slow connection here (limited to 512kb down). The KO deck has 12,000+ pieces of media and it's quite slow to download on my iPod touch.

Resolve- one thing I'd suggest is an option just to get the media- I tried disconnecting because it was taking so long, and the only way to start the media download again was to overwrite my deck. I'm glad it doesn't overwrite all the media again- it picks up where it started off- but for decks that are pretty large I can imagine it being a pain to have to download the deck again if your connection goes out.
It's slow, but you only have to do it once. And simply answering a card and syncing will make it resume the media download where it left off; you don't need to download your deck again.
Is it possible to copy media directly to the ipod? Only asking as I can't seem to download through the app - it says "Downloading media" but gets stuck at "191 media left" and doesn't do anything.. I have plenty of free space so I'm not sure what the problem could be, any idea?

I was using ankimini before and connected to my ipod using FTP to transfer media files. I don't mind doing this again until I can get the app to do it automatically, but I don't know where to transfer the files to - where is the media folder kept?
When it gets stuck, try rotating from landscape to portrait or vice versa a few times. Please let me know if that helps.

Just tried that but unfortunately it made no difference. I have no technical knowledge about such things but I've seen in the past you've had a look at someone other people's accounts and managed to fix the problem, so if this is another case where that might help my anki username is the same as here - thatkidpercy. It's the deck called KOREAN that I'm having issues with. Cheers
EDIT: Posted on Anki Forum.

thatkidpercy: I downloaded your deck and after about 1 file it told me you were missing media - the file da3965... is missing.

Thanks. I'm not sure exactly what did the trick in the end but after optimising the database, checking the media database and then re-downloading the deck on the ipod it seems to be working fine. I didn't get any missing file reports though so that's odd.. Anyway, it's all good now. Cheers.

Yeah same for me. I think this should be strongly recommended for anyone planning to sync media: Check Media database and optimise database and re-download deck.

On an unrelated note.. does anyone know how to delete a deck from the Ipod/Iphone? Is this possible yet?
Read the guide :-)
I hate to post a semi-tech question here instead of the anki forums, but since this thread is bumped up again and I'm here, why not?

Anyway, it's an easy one: Basically, after downloading media onto your iPhone/Touch, it is actually stored on the phone itself or does it need to access the internet to get your media? Meaning if you don't have an internet connection it won't work?

Sorry, that part just wasn't 100% clear in the guide.
It's stored on the phone.
Thank'ya
I've been having similar troubles with downloading media onto the itouch as well. I'll try these recommendations when I get home.
As I mentioned, I will buy this when the canvas tag or an equivalent wrting space is available. Where do I watch to find out as soon as it available?

Perhaps on the Anki website... Or Damien's twitter: http://twitter.com/ankisrs

I'm sure it'll come up in this thread too.

Argh, thought I did but must have missed it! Thanks. Smile
Still having trouble downloading media. I checked and optimised the media database and redownloaded but it stalled again (albeit on a different number this time). I tried re-checking and re-optimising to no effect. Any other tips?
Did you try rotating to landscape and back? This helped me once when it stalled... if you download the deck again does it start downloading the media again or does it stall straight away? Try posting on the anki forums.

Also, when you optimised and did database check, did you actually delete any cards that were found to have missing media?

Tried rotating, didn't work unfortunately. Tried re-downloading the deck and it stalls again. There's no missing media or anything like that as far as I can tell from the databse check (although there was initially the first time).

First time it hung up on "14x media left", second time "42 media left", third time "136 media left". My ad-hoc wifi connection is pretty dodgy though so maybe that's to blame? I wonder if it stalls when the connection gets interrupted and can't pick up where it left off? (the media download that is, not the deck itself).

I'll give it a rest for the weekend and try again next week.

edit: oohh down to 132 this time Smile
I might try and track down a more stable wireless connection and see how it goes. Thx for the tips.
