What does 目貼り mean? I can't find it in any dictionary online. It's from this sentence:

内側に貼られているガムテープがドアのガラスごしに見るとまるで内側から目貼りされているかの様に見える・・・

(The context is that Detective Conan is explaining how a crime was done; he's saying that from this side there's something funny about the tape around the bathroom door, but I can't quite work out what; perhaps that it wasn't stuck on properly or something?)

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I did find that definition - it's just I don't know what it means in the context of the sentence I quoted; so I was wondering if maybe there was some sort of colloquial usage that I'm missing, or something about the process of 'weather stripping' that I don't understand...

I think EDICT has probably confused you with 'weather stripping', which is a definition for 目貼り as a noun. The first weblio definition sounds like the one we want: 物の合わせ目や継ぎ目に紙などを張って密閉すること, which in this case I think is being used to mean taping up the edges of the door to seal it (is the murder a faked suicide-by-poison-gas?).

Oh well, "weather stripping" isn't really in my vocabulary so I was kinda guessing there :-) It looks to me like the Japanese definition is a little wider since it doesn't necessarily involve trying to keep the weather out.

It's used for all sorts of things, like ‘a secondary goal of weatherstripping is to keep interior air in, thus saving energy with heating and air conditioning’, keeping poison gas in, keeping the smell of zombies out, etc. Duh! You're not thinking like a murderer in a traditional Japanese home.

No idea why I mentioned a trad Japanese home. For some reason I started thinking of Jun'ichiro Tanizaki desperately sealing 襖.

That's the one. And yeah, it finally makes sense now. I was partially confused by what I thought was going on in the pictures. (I thought Conan was showing them the door from inside the bathroom, which wouldn't make any sense; but he's showing them the OTHER side of the door, and even though the seal made by the tape has been broken, it still looks like the tape is intact from the outside.)

いいから seems to have a lot of nuances, I think in this case the phrase ends up translatable to ‘just once (i'd like to try space travel)’? Amazingly prescient, given the recent survey on whether people would like a one-way trip to Mars.

ＸからY basically means that X is the starting point or origin for Y. Usually this works out to a cause-effect that can be translated as "because", but not in 100% of the cases. This seems to be particularly common with Xでいいから, which usually serves to somehow downplay a request or a wish, in particular to give conditions that make the request or wish seem more reasonable.

Another common example is something like 来週でいいから、これをチェックしてもらえない？ We wouldn't say "Because next week is OK, can you check this for me?" in English, but the meaning is fairly clear.

Also, you can think about it in English -- you can say "Just once, I'd like to go into space." You're not literally using "just" to say that you want to go into space exactly one time. It's just a way of emphasizing the unreasonable nature of the wish.

Can I just check that I've understood the sense of these sentences (from the Battle Royale manga):

~に勝つ　is "to defeat ~". So isn't it more like: So you thought "despite being a woman [I/she] was able to beat a man"... ?!

With the expression in quotes, is it possible they're talking about the concept or expression rather than an actual woman. I'm not sure if it means attacking someone using the words 「女の分際」as a crude weapon (as in 「女の分際」を鈍器として) or bashing the concept itself (「女の分際」をぶん殴る). Probably the former since he said 女の分際でよおぉーっ！！to her (I'm assuming).

Yeah, so the context is that there's a weaselly boy trying to attack/rape/kill this really hardballed girl. Even though he's got the upper hand in their fight, she just keeps insulting him and refusing to back down. Then that exchange that I quoted takes place. The first line I quoted is the boy quoting back something that the girl said to him, so I guess she was saying that there's no way she'll submit to him.

I figured when he says 女の分際でよおぉーっ！！ he's saying something like 'that's put you in your place', or 'now you're in the right place for a woman', which seems to convey the nuance of 'you're just a woman' but also 'you're beneath me' (both metaphorically and literally in this case). So when she replies to him, she's sort of saying, 'what, and even though I'm beneath you, you still need a weapon?' or something.

So wait, who is saying what line? She said the second line?

Sorry, in the lines I quoted above the guy says the first three lines and then the girl says the last line; but in the first line the guy is quoting something that the girl said to him earlier during their tussle (which I think is in a previous issue that I left at home today, so I'm missing part of the context myself!).

And while we're on the subject of a lack of context, can anyone help me with this one, from Kaiji (I've forgotten the context myself...):

達他は死んで、私も足２本、復讐すんだ！

I don't know what those kanji mean at the start. I think it's some sort of game where two people are in metal jackets and there are holes in the jackets but some of the holes are blocked, and each person takes turns stabbing the other person. But the people in question are a couple of lovers.

Okay, that's what I originally thought, so I'll stick with that interpretation: “In spite of being a woman, you were thinking you could beat a man?” till someone suggests otherwise (which is quite likely ;p).

btw, I had assumed the speakers alternated and the 2nd line was the girl. If it's the guy, then it's more like: "Did you really think a girl could beat a guy...?!" (as Nest0r had already started)

Hearing the context, I understand what you meant about 「女の分際」. I took it that she was insulting him by implying that no powerful sophisticated man would need to resort to 「女の分際」-type insults. sneer. But I suppose the actual physical violence gives it a more literal meaning. [He's actually pummeling her and] real men don't need to force women to submit. If she's referring to herself as 「女の分際」, I see what you mean about being pinned below him (in both senses.) It also depersonalizes her and could represent all supposedly defenceless, sexually subserviant women, as in: So does beating the crap out of the "weaker sex" make you feel like more of a man? That kind of thing.

Makes sense to me. But hopefully someone with a better understanding will respond with a translation b/c I think my brain is being too literal if I'm struggling with the "beating a position/role" idea.

A bit more context: I just found the previous issue, in which, before the fight starts, this girl says:

あんたみたいなヤツには絶対に負けないわっ！！
あたしの全存在をかけてっあんたを否定してあげるっ！！
