Mixing Primitives and Meanings

#1
Is it a particularly worrisome thing to mix up primitives and characters in stories?

For instance, 増 to me has the meaning of increase, but the primitive on the right sticks in my brain as formerly, not as increase. So when I see 層, as long as I remember the overall meaning of stratum, is it important that my story includes the correct primitive meanings?

I figure that later, hopefully the Japanese names and meanings will filter into my head - but right now I should just concentrate on getting the keywords / kanji ingrained as quickly as possible.

I have certainly found my reading comprehension has already greatly increased. Even if I don't know a kanji compound, RTK is invaluable in getting the gist of an article.

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I'm also curious. It would help me a lot to pick which meaning I use in each kanji.
