形 pronounciation

#1
Hey, I was wondering if anyone could tell me which reading one would use for 形, in for example this sentence:
次の場合も同じ形ですが、ちょっと黒のキングに細工をしてあります。
- from a chess guide.

From looking it up, I gather that かた is more like a style/mode and かたち is like an appearance/shape. Is that right?

Do you think that in this sentence it'd be かた or かたち? My guess is かた.

I think it's かたち
If the kanji was 型, it would be かた for sure. According to edict, the かた reading for 形 is not a common reading (if the kanji is on its own). Of course, I could be wrong in my assumption that the reading used here is かたち but just thought I'd give some input Smile

I myself am also curious. Anyone know for sure?

Could also be read as よう. I don't think it matters. I'd like to see more of the context, though.

It's かたち. I've been speaking Japanese entire my life and never met a person who'd pronounce it かた in sentences like that.

形 can be read as よう? Do you have any examples?

No. 形 can't be よう unless it's used in a proper noun. But 次の場合も同じようですが、ちょっと黒のキングに細工をしてあります。 is perfectly idiomatic Japanese and means pretty much the same thing. I think he guessed it from what sounds natural to him, not from his knowledge of kanji. Japanese kids who have no idea what the kanji is may guess that it's よう.

As much as I'd love it to be assumed that I have the intuition of a Japanese child, rikaichan is the real source of this odd reading. It has かた listed as a suffix.

You know, rikaichan also listed 貌 as being read よう. I only found out a little while ago it's ぼう.

Dictionaries give a quick sumary of the words with each reading.

Thanks very much everyone. I have another quick question, so I might post it in here.

When Japanese people write 笑 for like the equivalent of lol, what is the reading for that? Also, is there a way to read "wwww" ? Tongue

Good question, I hope someone answers it (in other words, this is a bump)
When I see or use (笑)I automatically just register it as "わらい" even though there's no い。I could be way off though xP

As far as I know, there is no definite answer to this as it is like asking the reading of "lol" or emoticons like Tongue. I've heard かっこわらい on TV and radio, but わらい is also a popular reading. If I were to read it aloud, I'd say かっこわらい or simply わらい with a pause before わ.

I googled and found this. As you can see, different people read this kind of thing differently. Here's how I read parentheses+kanji symbols:

(笑)かっこわらい or わらい
(仮) かり
(爆)ばく
(自爆)じばく
(汗)あせっ
(怒)ぬ!
(謎)なぞ
(苦笑)くしょう or にがわらい
(猛苦笑)もうくしょう
(照)てれっ
(株)かっこかぶ or かぶしきがいしゃ (because it means 株式会社 i.e., Inc. in English)
(有)かっこゆう or ゆうげんがいしゃ (because it means 有限会社, i.e., LLC in English)

Hope this will help.

My pleasure.

Forgot to answer this. I don't pronounce "w" at all. If there are "w"s at the end of a sentence, I change intonation and the tone of voice in my head as if the writer/poster is laughing.
