I hear the Uyoku Dantai are growing in numbers again. I think they are frustrated with the corrosion of traditional culture and its rapid replacement with american pop culture. would this be right? I have been reading some feature articles on the issue, because I find the Japanese right-wing to be an interesting topic. The youth in Japan these days do seem to want to reject traditional Japan and become fully americanized, and although that's a generalization, from reading a few feature articles on the topic, it doesn't seem too far off.

anyway, thoughts on the Uyoku, and have you had any encounters with them?

American pop culture? Replacing Japanese pop culture? In Japan?

Surely you jest. Smile

As for the Uyoku ... they are sort of like the Ku Klux Klan. Most people just suck in some air through their teeth and wish they would go away. But freedom of speech means freedom of speech you disagree with, right? Otherwise it doesn't mean a darn thing.

Please define "traditional culture". Smile

traditional culture are those aspects of Japanese culture which aren't from overseas, as far as I see. I think you misinterpreted what I said - I never said american pop culture is replacing Japanese pop culture. I said american pop culture is replacing traditional culture, which I think is a fair estimation, at least for a large part of the population, which is what I've read.

hmmm the Uyoku is like the KKK? I guess it's better they just drive around in vans, rather than killing people like the KKK.

Most Uyoku are actually just Yakuza in disguise, so I don't know if they themselves even know what Japanese traditional culture is... They are these guys you see in Shibuya and Shinjuku who are in black vans with big loud speakers on top and shouting out something incomprehensible.
