Would it be a good idea if we had a sticky topic listing links for all the exact subs we can find?

I'll start. I found Japanese subs for Final Fantasy 7:Advent Children Complete on bittorrent the other day. Unfortunately they were in this awkward ".sup" format. VLC wouldn't play the ".sup", so I eventually found a way to convert it to ".sub" so that it can play with VLC. However ".sub" and ".sup" formats do not actually contain text, it contains only a large set of bitmaps for the subtitles. This means they would not work with sub2srs. So I tried to convert to a more sensible format. Unfortunately, this process was rather long and frustrating (you have to train the software to recognise the characters by typing it the first time it appears in the subtitles). I eventually did it and now I have some exact subs I can use with sub2srs =D

There may be a few errors in the .srt, but hopefully nothing major...

Does anyone know where you can get the exact subs for Tiger & Dragon? I know they're available on the DVD but I... uh... I don't have the DVD.

You could, but you wouldn't have the timings, and you wouldn't be able to use it with sub2srs

Does anyone know if fansub groups keep transcripts of the shows they sub? If so, would it be possible to use those transcripts against the english sub timing to make Japanese subs?

I just downloaded the Japanese subs for FF:AC, but VLC refuses to show the Japanese. I get, instead, the white boxes of death. Anyone know how to make VLC work with Japanese?

I had to change the font for the subtitles to show in VLC.

Tools->Preferences->Subtitles and OSD.
Then browse for a Japanese font. This fixed it for me.

I've tried changing the font as well as checking to make sure everything is set for UTF-8. Nothing seems to work. I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty 64 with VLC 1.0.0-rc1. Default encoding is Universal (UTF-8) and the path to the font I want to use is /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-japanese-mincho.ttf

Any help? I'd really like to fix this, if possible. Japanese subs would be a real help.

subs2srs does support .sub files as long as there is an accompanying .idx file. A screenshot of what it looks like can be found here.

(I can't access MegaUpload at the moment, so I'm not surel if bombpersons #.sub pack includes the .idx files)

AH! That's fantastic!! Even if I can't make them work in the player, I can at least copy and paste into Anki Sweet! Death Note is probably my favorite anime, so that's... really great! Can anyone attest to how accurate they are?

They don't at the moment, however now that I know they work, I'll upload the idx file too.

What do you get when you open the file in gedit? If it tells you that you have to select a character encoding, then open the srt file in firefox and copy and paste the contents into a new file and save it with the same file name as the other file. I had to do this to get it to work, however I don't think it should be a problem anymore, since I've already done it to the file I uploaded.

About Death Note subs:

I can't share my experience with them, since I haven't tried them yet, but I think they work fine, I haven't heard anything negative about them. But what do I know?
And I found out that it's not subs for all the episodes, just the 24 first episodes (but that's still a great find, nevertheless! )

Thank you sethg =D I'll edit my post accordingly. Megaupload, Rapidshare, etc have always been a pain in the but. Unfortunately if you don't have webspace it's the next best thing.

What was the software you used to OCR (?) the subtitle images? I've had an idea!

The .SUP file is a format for adding subtitles to DVDs, so if you had that and know how to mux and remux dvds, you could add them for watching on a DVD like subtitles on DVDs.

I used (recommendation from a tutorial) VobSub. Once I'd installed it I used Subresync, which is one of the programs VobSub installs. (this is windows only I think, I had to use a vritual machine to run it)
