I absolutely love music and I'm always interested in what music people like. It is a great feeling to share the music of lesser known artists and grow something in your life from that music. a lot of people here appear to like Japanese music but that's not my type of music at all but maybe something will come my way someday.

Maybe we can share some musical thoughts that can help us along our study path.

I'm reaaally into Hiromi Uehara's music at the moment:

I've been a fan of her playing ever since I heard her "Brain" album. I love that trio - great jazz! Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but that Japanese woman can PLAY!

My musical tastes have gotten heavier as i got older, starting with stuff like nirvana, offspring and greenday at 13 more recently stuff like machinehead and trivium.

listening to Maximum the Hormone almost exclusively at the minute (i tend to get fixated on a band or album for months at a time) with the occasional listen of Triviums new album Shogun, I've rediscovered the love i have for SOAD that i had through college.
I literally wore a hole in the "10,000 Fists" album by Disturbed (although that was more the cd player than the 500+ times i probably listened through it)

Although i listen to lots of differant stuff too. Basically if it involves a guitar ill give it a try (im a guitarist myself) Listen to Ska punk bands ala Less than Jake and Reel big fish a lot also. Alkaline trio are also a huge favourite of mine, their latest album was a bit meh.. but following the last 3-4 peerless albums would be a little difficult for anyone. "Good Mourning" the album by them could be the soundtrack to my 3rd year of college if my life was made into a biopic.

I also have a love of the blues from my father. Got to see BB King live a few years back. Search out "While we cry" by Kenny wayne Sheperd. Its a bit similar to Little Wing by hendrix, but still a fantastic solo song.

also much love for Joe Satriani's "Summer Song" I don't listen to a lot of shred guitarists but that song is phenomenal.

For specific genres, I'm mostly into melodic death metal (Arch Enemy (Nemesis) and Amon Amarth (Twilight of the Thunder God - amazing song - Viking metal is awesome!) being the main ones) and to some degree Norwegian black metal (mostly Immortal though, and they call their genre holocaust metal... There has been some Dimmu Borgir too at times, but after I saw them live, the studio albums didn't quite match the live experience). Folk metal is good at times too (Eluveitie).
All this has "evolved" over time, starting with Turbonegro, then moving on to Metallica and the likes, before it moved up some more untill it reached where it is today.
On the more "lighter" side of the metal genre, a band that I've listened a lot to is Hammerfall (especially around the time when I was playing WoW a lot, Hammerfall was awesome). Amazing power metal.

However, since like a year ago, I've been getting openings/endings from anime that I like. A lot of this is still mainly in the rock/metal direction (if not as heavy as say Arch Enemy, there are a few power metal-ish (not visual kei) songs).
This is also what I listen to mostly for the time being (I moved all my western music over to an external hard drive that is located at my parent's place), in an attempt to go more "all Japanese all the time" (although I spend waaaaay too much time on English/Norwegian forums and sites for it to be called "all the time").
A few months back I also came across this Japanese artist going only by the name YUI. Some great acoustic guitar, and a very relaxing voice. Unfortunately, it seems most of her vids on youtube gets deleted. :/

Everything and everything from Opera and Classical, all the way down to hits and not so hits from 50's to 90's, classic Rock and Roll, Metal (Heavy, Power, Death, Black, New, Dark, Symphonic, Medieval), Punk, Pop, Country (U.S, Canadian and Australian), selected Hip Hop, drizzled with some Electronic and Techno, Fusion and some Latin Rock, J-Rock, C-Rock, a myriad of alternative bands and singers from all across Europe, soundtracks and 8-bit Megaman like sequences.

Ladytron, NiN, Black Light Burns, Daft Punk, Stereophonics, Hooverphonic, Zero 7, The Cardigans, Sneaker Pimps (becoming x album only), Beck, Evanescence, Nightwish, various trance and elctronic music... scanning my iTunes playlist. The highest play count stuff I have right now is Anime Theme music though and some Finish Rap Music, thought I deleted all that though still have some Mariska songs in there.

My tastes tend to be on the expansive side myself (my last.fm, for but a hint of what I listen to).

Generally, I love highly melodic, emotional, and/or "heavy" music, preferably music that makes me think, which covers just about as many genres as you might imagine, from metal to country to classical and in between. My very favorite bands/musicians/composers include (referencing my last.fm lists because I'm lazy) Acid Bath, Boris, J.S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Envy, Electric Wizard, My Bloody Valentine, Neurosis, Nick Drake, Church of Misery, Mono... could go on forever, so I won't!

As for Japanese music, I find it a little more challenging to find stuff I really dig (and I refuse giving up my non-J music!), but there are obvious exceptions with bands such as Boris, Church of Misery, Mono and Envy, all of which I absolutely adore and could listen to all day without pause.
I've written about a handful of Japanese bands on my blog, which reminds me that I'm long overdue to write about more.

I mostly listen to general Japanese stuff (like Spitz) and various forms of electronica, mainly ambient and psychedelic stuff. I like Orbital, Spongle and Aphex Twin for example.

I liked that you linked to Halcyon (and on and on) by Orbital. I have it on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack (which was how I branched into some of the other artists on the same album. That kicked off a whole phase of Industrial music in my life. KMFDM is still the best:

I'm pretty sure there are more genres I like but that's all I can think of so far.

I do like random pop stuff on some occasions too, don't think I'm some prude.

Mostly listen to Warp-esque electonic stuff (Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, Richard Devine etc.), east coast hip hop from the early 90s (Black Moon, Wu-Tang Clan, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Organized Konfusion etc.), post-rock (Mono, GYBE, Do Make Say Think etc.) and sludge/drone (Boris, Battle of Mice, Belong etc.) although I've been known to dabble in jazz when feeling especially adventurous (Max Roach & Sam Rivers ftw).

Metal, mostly stuff with incredibly technical guitar parts. Favourite guitarist is Paul Gilbert he is totally the man.

Wow, a bunch of people who love Bad Religion and learning Kanji (and twitter...). What are the odds?

I am pretty much into anything that is either fast and exciting or smooth and chill. Also the genres are preferably not experimental or post something and must (at least more then 99% of my song list agrees) be instrumental with little to no vocals at all. I do tend to favor genres that have fusion and progressive in them and even better if it is instrumental progressive fusion.

Some examples (Just add instrumental in all of the genres) of them are:
