I thought I'd give StarDict another shot, and ran into this same problem. Well, I try to change the font to a UTF font similar to what you do with VLC player, but StarDict crashes each time I push the font button in options

First I'm going to re-install StarDict, but if it continues anyone know which file StarDict saves these settings at so I can manually change it.

You could try Application Data\Stardict\stardict.cfg - Mine says:

use_custom_font=true
custom_font=MS PMincho 12

Granted, for some reason it worked fine after the reload as far as the dictionary is concerned with exception of not displaying the image files for special dictionary characters in the pop-up (main window displays them fine). Only change I did was keep the Meiyo dict in it's own folder in the dict folder.

Still getting a crash on trying to load a font with the program. I'll change the font to be the MS PMincho font though.

All of my dictionaries are in their own folders: Stardict\dic\stardict-a_through_z_dict-2.4.2\ , et cetera.

By the way, this might sound weird, but the way you use the word 'granted' always throws me off. I think you're missing a 'but'/contrasting statement, if I'm understanding how you mean to use the word. ;p

Of course, I've come to view this use of 'granted' as Nukemarine-specific since I'm an extreme descriptivist, but reading 'Granted,' with no follow-up is like walking up stairs, expecting an extra step, and not finding one.

I tend to type with a flow of thought method, and I'm very bad at not re-reading my submission prior to hitting submit. I'd be surprised if my paragraphs even have a coherent link.

As for granted, I think I'm using it more as a "given that" or "I'm giving you that". So yeah, it's a bad habit of using words the way I think they're used, without ever double checking that that's how they're supposed to be used. That doesn't even touch my overuse of parenthesis.

Yeah, 'granted' is always paired with a following correction or contrasting statement. It means something along the lines of 'You might be right that...' or 'I'll concede that...' and must be followed with something similar to 'but...' or 'however, I think...'.

Looks like Stardict's dictionaries are no longer online? The good ones, at least. I guess they weren't 'legit', as Jarvik or someone said. The Meikyo/Babylon stuff? Looks like they're still around, though, in torrent form or somesuch. No idea how long they'll remain seeded... lucky me, I already procured the stuff I needed. I mean, I totally took the time to check whether every procured dictionary was copyrighted before snagging from sourceforge, of course, and avoided the illicitly available ones. ^_^

I love using 大辞林, but it's a pain having to use yahoo or my electronic dictionary when trying to input them into Anki. Is there any way to use a J-J dictionary like rikaichan to spit out text ready to be imported into Anki?

StarDict can do what Rikaichan does, re: save entry to text (either whole entry or just the word) but so far as I know neither of them make Anki-ready texts, you have to tinker with that yourself.

No idea, but. You'd rather be forced to stay in Firefox so you can use the 's' key, rather than say, hitting tab/space bar (the tab only once as long as the 'focus' stays on Save button) in StarDict in any program including Anki, with all those other dictionaries? Hmm. ;p

I don't really care what software I use, but over 90% of the importing of words on my computer is done through Firefox anyway. Being able to use a dictionary on Anki would be rather useless, because in theory I've learned everything in it already.

I just want fast vocabulary card creation abilities through firefox (more applications would be a plus) with more than just the J > E dictionary that rikaichan uses.

I use Stardict in Anki all the time--it's not like I know every word in every sentence as soon as the card is made and from then onward, and I can't imagine having to put definitions for every word in every card rather than just using Stardict; I use it in various other programs, and in Firefox. Honestly, if someone makes it so I can play JDIC audio via Stardict, the only thing my individual vocab cards will have in Anki will be the original word, as a placeholder so that algorithm can work. ;p

I never use Rikaichan for a popup, hehe, just the lookup bar for the rare fuzzy kanji I come across or when I want to paste the simplest definitions somewhere like 'words of the thread' here. I don't even know, does Rikaichan perpetually popup with hover? Because I couldn't stand that and made it hotkey-only with Stardict.

I'd rather just have a macro thingy that takes texts produced in Stardict format (though it could be modified for its lesser, more limited sibling Rikaichan ;p) and arranges them in an Anki friendly import format rather than having to do find/replace/manual editing/etc. Though I guess if someone wanted to mod the actual open source programs and make it so the text file it actually creates already uses this format, parsing the keyword, reading, and definition, that'd work.

Using the default installation (or close enough) of stardict I got it to export stuff like this. It wouldn't be very hard to write a little script to edit them into tab separated entries for anki to read. Assuming you were making only vocabulary cards, it would let you make cards with just a click to make the entry, run the script to edit the text file, then import in Anki.

Not as easy as using rikaichan and hitting s only, but it must just be enough for somebody as lazy as me... I'll have to see how I like these dictionaries before I make a script.

I have a tonne of Stardict dictionaries installed, so my results tend to be pretty long.

Actually even though I said that about the macro thingy, I just tell Stardict to remember individual words when making the text file. There's still the issue of, when I can't find those words in the Core 6000/KO2001 decks, having to make individual sound files from JDIC. So I end up having to copy down the reading and sticking that in front of the kanji in order to get it to work in mistamark's program for batch downloading. That's why I got excited then sad when cb4960 had that Rikaichan plugin. Would be nice to just see the word in Anki, use Stardict for definition + audio on the fly... or somehow go from Stardict to list of word+readings for mistamark's plugin--hmm maybe I can tinker around and send entire definitions to a text, eliminate the definition lines, reverse the kanji/kana order, add a line for 'sound:name of mp3', and voila!

I don't do clicking either, I just tab to the Save button and hit space bar, as mentioned above. And then the focus stays on the Save button so I just hit space bar from there. I do wish it was more clear cut and hotkeyed though.

All I can say is that all of my Japanese dictionaries work perfectly in StarDict.

I used that file too, but it has character encoding errors, that caused problems in some cases for me and for jino123 above.
I converted it with the correct encoding and added some formatting and colors, now it's better than the original Babylon version.
Maybe I was too secretive, the download link is on the screenshot.
And now here.

By the way http://goldendict.org/ is another pop-up dictionary for Win and Linux and it can use Babylon and ABBYY Lingvo files.

I noticed this a while ago without actually registering it, but apparently when I use Stardict now it de-inflects words for me, i.e. is no longer confused if I scan something inflected, and shows what was scanned followed by root form and definition/examples. Not sure if it's a dictionary-related thing or an update that I didn't notice or what. I remember I used to have to switch to Rikaichan or make sure to scan only the beginning of a word and hope a match showed up if it was close enough to the root.

Does anyone know if there are any of those J-J stardict dictionaries like 大辞林 floating around? If not is there a way to convert epwing to a file type that works on goldendict mobile? Would be a massive help and save time when using android tablet rather than having to use All国語辞書 when I want to search a monolingual definition or pitch accent.

As far as I know, they aren't. Your best bet is probably to get EPWING files & use an EPWING viewer. EBPocket supports Stardict, but the free version is kind of limited, so if you'd rather stick with free ones I'd go with Droidwing, and just use separate apps for each dictionary file type.

Cheers for letting me know about Droidwing,IMO better than ebpocket pro as i use a mix of lingoes and stardict files with Goldendict so no need for only stardict with ebpocket. would have been nice if goldendict android opened epwing as well though.

having said that i managee to find the stardict j-j dictionaries and kenkyusha and genius ones aswell, thanks to a friend searching vietnamese sites so if anyones still looking google is your friend.

however for some reason the stardict versions of monolingiual dictionaries don't show pitch accent much like the preinstalled ones on iphone. so a mix of IMI, goldendict, ebpocket/droidwing, and occassionally if wifi is available All国語辞典, purely for how good the progressive waei dictionary is (if anyone has any offine formatbofbthis pl share) seem to be the best blend of dictionaries on android, which can all be used as popup i suppose by using.the share button when highlighting a word.
