Just curious as to what the difference would be between these two sentences.

最近少し太っちゃったようだ。

最近少し太っちゃったみたいだ。

みたい comes off as more colloquial to me, but that's just a gut feeling. I've nothing whatsoever to back it up, sorry!

Overall, they're the same meaning. They just "feel" different. I'm sure someone else could answer it better XD;

I don't feel the need to translate the difference to English, nor think you should worry about.

みたいだ is more informal, more of a spoken word, and in formal writing ようだ should be used.

According to Jim Breen, 「みたいだ」 is colloquial whereas 「ようだ」 isn't.

Quite an important difference I'd say.
