I guess they need to check that people are legit, but that's so hard. Anyway, my first attempt was rejected. Any suggestions as to improve on this translation are welcome.

I think the bit where you've made a bit of a mistake is with the second last line.

かな is added to the end of sentences a lot and means something along the lines of 'I wonder if...' but it doesn't have the wistful sound that it does in English when you say that.

So 田中さんは大丈夫かな would be I wonder if tanaka is ok.

かな is often used with the potential form and in this case means something along the lines of 'I wonder if I can wear it and look fashionable', which sounds horrible in English but conveys the right sort of meaning.

If you really want to do this, why don't you try and find a Japanese person that you could tag-team with? I've always found that it's best to have two people translating things, a native speaker from each side. That way subtle nuances in both languages are more likely to go unmissed.

"Out of the popular novel, 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya', a new design of costume has made its appearance". 新作 means "a new work" and I'm not sure how to express this in English here, perhaps just "new" is adequate, but I used "design".

The "Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" takes place in "North High", so that explains the 県立北高校. I think this can be translated just as "North High School". I'm a bit puzzled about the 男子制服 which suggests a boy's uniform, but this is not talking about boys' clothes but Haruhi's (the picture above illustrates what the text is about), maybe the phrase is generic for "school uniform" of either sex? I would leave the "boy's" out. "It consists of the Haruhi-style hair-ribbon and two styles of "North High" school uniform.

Not sure how to unpick the next sentence: "Both the ribbon and jacket colours, together with their shape, give the items great impact" (not much different from yours).

What wrightak said regarding the next sentence, but I'm not sure it's first person, I was thinking along the lines of "Think you can get away with wearing it?"
