Hey guys!

I've been learning Japanese for a while now using anki. Up till now my cards have two sides one in Japanese and a translation in English. I though this was the way to do things. But now I look at this site and the Kazumoto site people talk a lot about here, and it seems this is not the way to do it. Is it really right I should just be using Japanese? How do I go about that?

I guess my big concern is my speaking abilities. I kinda feel my memory is pretty bad and that if I don't practice going from English to Japanese the words won't really stick. Does anyone have experience of this?

Also I have the book kanji odyessy which gives the kanji and English translations. Shouldn't I be using those translations? If not do I really have to go to the effort of making my own Japanese explanations? Or should I not be using this book at all?

Unless you're really just starting out, I'd say you should drop English soon. The process of translating, and of finding correspondences between languages is a very bad way to learn, especially for Japanese. Remember: any translation is wrong, in the sense that it cannot provide you the exact meaning of the original.
And why wouldn't it be "really right to just be using Japanese"? It's Japanese you're learning, after all.
