They're sometimes fairly close in ways that could confuse you, like 山 (san vs. shan1). But for the most part you're right.

What I find annoying about some of the multiple reading kanji in Chinese is that the readings sometimes have different meanings, like 着 (zhe progressive vs. zhao2 resultative -- having both the progressive and resultative be the same would be familiar from Japanese but not when they have different readings!)
