Regardless of where one's strength lies, engaging all the senses has proven to help when I comes to memory. While not wholly necessary, writing things down, as I said before, can only help. It is for this reason I question why a person would forgo it.
There are those who like using their hands when learning, and there are those who don't... and as there are so many different types of learners, I think it's good to always keep an open mind about learning methods.
