You need to get the IME activated for Japanese on your computer, if you have a PC. If you do a Google search for "Japanese IME XP" or "Japanese IME Vista," you should get a bunch of hits, probably at least one or two of which will be helpful.
If you're running a Mac, though, I can't help, but probably someone else here can.

What operating system are you using? If you are using Windows (XP or Vista), you might need the operating system install disk(s) to add Asian language support.
I've done this several times with XP and once with Vista, so if you need help please feel free to e-mail me.

I've recently found out that even though the dialogs boxes say you need the CD (XP) sometimes the files are already on your computer and just need to be installed by pointing to the right directory.
For Other OS's just google the OS name and japanese input for directions.

If you don't have the installation disc for Windows XP - you can download the file needed for Asian languages on various torrent sites.

on a mac just go to the "international" section of the "system preferences" (in the apple menu), and it is pretty much self-explanatory from there.

I've downloaded it succesfully now but I still can't use it properly, When I go to type it puts in a random Hiragana symbol for different keys.
how can I make it so that I type in Romaji then it converts to hiragana as I type and I can use space to put it into Kanji?

You need to go into your properties (from 'tools' in the language bar) and change the input method from kana to romaji.
