Woah, it looks like new kanji are being added to the Jouyou Kanji list! Cf. this article on the Asahi Shinbun : http://www.asahi.com/national/update/011...60297.html . Apparently, this is the first evolution of the list of Jouyou Kanji since 1981 !

Very common Kanji that were previously left out, like 俺, 丼, 誰, or 箸 were added to the list, along 191 total new kanji that are being added.

Some of them are in RtK1, some of them aren't... I wonder whether we will see a new edition of RtK.

They haven't been added, they are planned to be added in the new list (which will not be called jouyou any more).

5 characters are also being removed. No real point I think since people already know them and they'll likely just be moved over to the jinmeiyou list anyways.

Psy on Jpod101's forums listed them out with some common vocab he's seen in daily use. I'm making use of his list to make an iKnow list of them, substituting a few of the vocab for some from the dictionary when I can't find them, or they're proper names.

My question is when are they going to add Emoji?

I think the whole point was that these are already common usage and they should have been part of the Jouyou already and weren't.

I've seen it called 新常用, but that might have been in place of a yet to be determined name.

The breakdown of the 191 characters is:
RTK1: 37 (or 38)
RTK3: 132
Not RTK: 21 (or 22)

The either/or figures above are because I'm not sure whether they are going to introduce 曽 (RTK1 no. 501, "formerly") or its variant 曾 (not in RTK, "formerly (alt)").

I made a small Google spreadsheet with the non-RTK kanji plus suggested keywords and vocabulary.

RTK3 does include 篭, which is a variant of 籠, but the latter seems more common.

Thanks for that list. I wonder if they will or should be appended somehow to RTK3 (on this site or officially).

I wonder if there is any chance for these to become frames 3008+ on RevTK once they are official...

If Fabrice gets into adding non-RTK kanji, he might as well just add the entire 6000 or so from kanjidic.

I'd be okay with adding 10,000 empty frames to this site. Well, empty as in stories/keywords. You can search by kanji then add something.

I'm a big fan of this updated list. So many kanji in general use that somehow were never added to the jouyou list. すぐ、俺様は「俺」を使えるさ！

My (Japanese) wife tells me that the new Jouyou Kanji (or whatever the name is) were introduced from today; I don't know her source, but presumably TV.

Not sure whether it's worth trying to cherry-pick the extras from RTK3, do ALL of RTK3, or just not worry about it...!

If you have an iPhone/ iPod Touch, this app Kakitori Kanji Training (350円) includes a section on the 196 new Joyo kanji. The app has both learning and testing sections and puts each kanji in a short phrase or expression. Best bit is the drawing area which is larger than most other apps, covering the whole width of the screen. Worst bit: it appears to be available only in Japan.
