Use subs2srs to Create Anki Decks Based on Your Favorite Movie or Show

Thanks for the report, however, I couldn't reproduce the issue. I used the same paths as indicated in the logs. I'll keep an eye on it though.

Thanks! This one works fine.

you should allow episode number to be entered in "01"and "001" form for consistency
for now if i want to regenerate audio clips for ep 07 from 24 ep series i end up with wrong file names

Two very useful suggestions.

*Long Clip warning
If a audio clip is going to be over 10 seconds, it should warn where this is going to happen when you click "Go". This usually means something screwed up somewhere. This especially happens if the there is some dialog after the credits, but the dialog is only in one of the sets of subs. I have a case where this is trying to generate a two and a half minute clip. O_o;

*Only nearby Leading/Trailing lines
Leading/Trailing lines should only show up if they are like within the last 30 seconds of the current clip. Maybe the duration itself could be a setting. If someone says a line, then it cuts to the OP theme, there shouldn't be anything for it's trailing line (especially if the credits have been removed from the subs).

Edit: A couple other minor things that I also recently came across.

*You shouldn't be able to have tabs (or whatever the delimiter is) in your subtitle dialog, as it might cause problems if it's also the delimiter you are using. So convert them to spaces or something else. Or even just a warning would help.

*It would also be nice if there was Token processing on the Snapshot/Audio/Video Prefixes, so we can include the deck_name as a media folder.
Code:
srs_audio_filename_prefix = [sound:${deck_name}.media/
srs_snapshot_filename_prefix = <img src="${deck_name}.media/

Which "subtitle" dialog are you referring to? I'm not quite sure that I follow. Thanks.

I have just released version 29.0 of subs2srs.

Download subs2srs v29.0 via SourceForge

What Changed?

● Added nearby line range feature for context lines. (Thanks Daichi!).
By default, the range is 15 seconds for both leading and trailing context lines.

● Added duration column to the preview dialog.

● Added Long Clip Warning. (Thanks Daichi!).
In the preview dialog, lines that exceed 10 seconds will be shown in red. When pressing the Go! button in the preview dialog, you will see a warning dialog if any of the active lines exceed 10 seconds. To configure or disable this feature: "Tools > Preferences > Misc > Long Clip Warning".

● Added token support to the prefix and suffix preferences. (Thanks Daichi!).

There was literally a tab inside one of my Japanese subtitle lines of text, which screwed up my import for that line till I fixed it manually of course.

Ah, I'll strip those out in the next version.

Took me a while to figure out why this wasn't working. If you load an old .srs file, it defaults to 0 seconds. XD Otherwise it seems to work great.

As you noted above, it only works from the preview dialog. Rather than the normal Go button. I can live with that.

But when the warning does pop up, it doesn't tell you what episodes and when the problems are. Which would be a hassle if you have a long series.

I was happy to see it catching an error I didn't even notice before, so it seems to work functionally.

No problems here.

I'm having an issue with one of the subtitles I'm trying to use for Anki. Both Japanese and English are .ass
The sub has position information. So I unchecked Remove styled lines from subs2srs and I was able to overcome the problem of No dialog lines found error.

My issue has to do with how subs2srs formats two subtitle lines starting and ending at the same time.
Example:
Correct English: I'm Patrick Corlasawar of the AEU!
Correct Japanese: AEUのパトリック・コーラサワーだ!

However, I'm getting the following in Japanese:
パトリック・コーラサワーだ! AEUの

Timing info:
0:05:29.62 0:05:32.34 0:00:02.72 {\pos(420,898)}AEUの\N
0:05:29.62 0:05:32.34 0:00:02.72 {\pos(420,1018)}パトリック・コーラサワーだ!\N

I tried so many things to try to get subs2srs to understand that I want the first line first and second line second but nothing seems to work. Can someone help please?

So simply put, subs2srs can't solve this.

If you really want to use these subs, your going to have to retime by hand. Grab Aegisub and fix everything line-by-line. I wish I could say there was a simpler method, but there is absolutely no way for subs2srs to know if a line is split like that.

I have to do a lot of work to make my subs work, this includes removing OP/ED themes, and making sure the timing works okay for every episode in the show I'm doing. (You also should check the timing where each commercial break would show up.) It's a big pain make sure everything works right, but it's even more a pain when you realize much later that a couple episodes were off by half a second. >_<;

That's what I was afraid to hear! I was hoping to have an automated way for Aegissub to pick the second line and use it as first if there are two lines with the same timestamp. Sounds easy in theory.
It's gonna be a lot of manual labor but I thought to give it a shot and see. Thanks for getting back to me. Time to get to work, I guess >_<

Let me preface this by saying that the following is a very vague question/request coming out of the 'Steam Games Thread' here that might not fit all too well in this thread. I haven't really given the matter a lot of thought yet, but was still curious to hear your opinions so I couldn't resist posting it here:

Have you thought about a building a tool around video game localization files? To me it seems like they'd be a valuable source to use to create personalized and interesting learning material in order to make the leap to using native media easier. With sub2srs, I've always had the problem that I found it very hard to find good EN _and_ JP subtitles for movies I'm interested in. So when I recently started playing games in Japanese I couldn't help but notice that the localization files are a potential goldmine.

Small sample from Bioshock Infinite: http://abload.de/img/gamesubtitlesdqkli.png

The localization files provide a perfect transcript of the game. To me it seems like there's a lot of potential to somehow incorporate this into sub2srs or even build a specific tool around those files. E.g. type some words and find the corresponding line in EN&JP, type a JP word and see all the places it's used, etc.

What do you guys think? Am I just overly enthusiastic or do you see opportunities to build something around those files?

I guess you could call the above a really shameless plug to cb4960 in the hope he comes up with another tool from the heavens Wink.

The only problem I see with this is every single game engine is going to handle localization differently. There is no one-size-fits-all solution here.

One possibility is to create a universal format that can be processed through a tool like subs2srs. A tool that can have it's own audio source for every single line of dialog. I think this could be a useful extension upon subs2srs.

However, in the end you have to create a custom solution for every single game engine you want to handle, and this isn't a simple task.

If the Japanese subtitles provide Ruby lines. I can just safely remove them. I assume Anki generates Ruby for me automatically or subs2srs does. Can someone please clarify this for me so I can continue working.

Anki can generate furigana if you have the Japanese plugin setup correctly. It's not perfect, but it's usually good enough. I just correct the problems as I notice them in my reviews.

Thanks a lot. That's all I needed to hear

Episode 1 is done after several hours of work. Where would I upload the Anki deck to share it with other people so they can use it to learn?

Hi everyone, I have a problem with subs2srs.
It seems there is a problem in how I create Anki decks, because when I import the file on Anki there is just one card for the entire episode (for example in Clannad there is only the "この町は嫌いだ" line).
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I really like the idea but I can't get it to work on my Mac.

Installing Mono and X11 as recommended just gives me the following error in Terminal:

Then I tried using Crossover several times with WinXP, Win7 and Win8. The problem is that whenever I click on a button I get a error message about System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Core'

Any recommendations?

Edit: After several hours I finally managed to solve it by using the steps posted on page 37 by tokyostyle.

1. Click Configure -> Install Software ...
2. Install "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1"
3. Under Select which bottle to install choose "New winxp bottle..."
4. (Optional) Change the Bottle name to something like subs2srs

5. Click Configure -> Manage Bottles ...
6. Select your subs2srs bottle and click Advanced
7. Click "Open C: Drive in Finder"
8. Copy the sub2srs folder, which you download and unzip, into "Program Files"

9. Double-click subs2srs.exe which should be under Program Files/subs2srs

The combination with XP, .NET 3.5 SP1 (downloaded directly from Microsoft and not using the navigation in Crossover) and copying the subs2srs-folder to the "Program Files" seems to be the solution.

Is it Possible to sort field output orders? for example, if I wanted to have expression field as the first one?

Rikaisama allows this to be configured and I really miss this option

Don't think so but the field mapping is always the same so if you write it down somewhere you won't have to worry about it again.

I believe changing the card template is another way to accomplish what you want (although I haven't tried that)
