I came across this one the other day:

四捨五入
ししゃごにゅう

I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out what the phrase meant from context.

Then, a friend explained - it means "to round up" - you throw out the fours and keep (round up) the fives! Excellent!!! Explained once and you'll never forget the meaning.

Here's another cool 四字熟語:

弱肉強食

Guess what does it mean... =)

焼肉定食

焼肉定食=yakiniku meal

The Power Japanese book "Kanji Idioms" is filled with these 4-character set phrases. It's a pretty awesome reference.

'round up' implies that 4.1 = 5
your expression just means 'round', so 4.3=4 and 4.7=5

Of course it counts as a 熟語, any word made up of more than 1 kanji is a 熟語. What you're wondering is probably whether or not it's a 四字熟語 and it is. It's not an ideomatic one though since you can split it into 2 real 熟語.

I've always liked 一生懸命.

And 三日坊主. I think Khatz mentioned that one on his blog once.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I suspected it was a 四字熟語 because when I press space the IME converts it into kanji as a whole block
