Korean?

#1
There are so many resources for learning Japanese, but when my sister told me she wanted to learn Korean, I had a look and I was stumped as where to find decent resources to learn the language =(

The problem is, I don't know where to find any really good resources like tae kim's guide and this site, but for Korean.

I found a few sites but I don't know if any of them are reliable or not...

Does anyone know any good books / guides for Korean? I'm thinking of things that can get good enough grammer so that the AJATT Method can be applied, but I have no idea about Korean at all...

obviously there's less guides/etc for korean. maybe there's good books out there? I don't know... i never looked.

But there's some really good korean dictionaries I have like 5 lol. but memorizing dictionary is not fun...

there's korean subtitles for some korean dramas on drama addicts forums.

Try having her apply the sentence method to Korean. Watch unsubbed dramas and listen to raw Korean streams. The hard part will be finding out about grammar. Wikipedia can help a bit in that department. I know the problem you/she are going through as lack of sources is why I stopped studying it myself. However, at the time, I wasn't aware of sentence mining with SRS (without equals headache). If I were aware of things I know now, I'd probably still be studying the language.

I think it is impossible to study korean without a decent dictionary. Imagine trying to learn japanese with hiragana only. Not just that, Japanese is (generally) much easier to pronounce than korean.

I recommend her completely barring from all romanisation forms from the beginning. This will ruin all her pronunciation. I think this same concept should apply to Japanese learners too. This is why i forbid the use of romaji for i think Romaji:Hiragana is definitely not a 1:1 relationship and you will notice this in korean but the difference is much greater. I think romaji is the reason foreigners have horrible pronunciation.

Also i find it tremendously difficult to spell words in korean. (My native korean friends say they have a hard time too)

I used this site to efficiently learn hangul in one night, not even, 2 hours (including chatting on msn). Though I have been watching starcraft videos for about 2 years, korean movies and drama for about 4 years since high school, so I already have a firm grip on how to pronounce certain words.
He does not teach all of them, but more 'advanced' ones are built off the primitves so you can assume the pronunciation from a word you already know.

This may sound a little geeky, but there are lots and lots of Starcraft matches with Korean commentators on Youtube. When I feel like doing something that's not in Japanese I sometimes watch those - and get bored soon so I go back to Japanese as my Korean is practically non-existent. Even if your sister is not into videogames, it's just fun to watch games being broadcasted as sport events. Smile

to add to evil dragon

check out youtube users

Nevake
VioleTAK
Jon747

These are easily the biggest vod uploaders in all of youtube. If you actually know alittle about the game of starcraft as well you'll be able to make out some of what they're saying even if you just understand the basic "issumnida" (equiv to aru/iru).

also check out teamliquid.net they have lots of (high quality) starcraft vods. Sorry for de-railing the thread here Tongue

That being said. "starcraft" language is ultra dorky. But they use the polite form so this is good enough input i suppose.

Awesome, Thanks for the tips / links guys =D
Obviously much less resources for Korean than Japanese I guess, but I'll take a look at those sites and see what she thinks.

It's weird how alien Korean looks to me, I just can't imagine a time where Japanese looked like that to me, it looks so natural now...
