I have some questions on how to use pictures like these with the SRS. I'm currently working on learning hanzi past the point of Heisig RTH. I've been putting some pics in my answer field to strengthen the visual memory while learning (and relearning upon failed card). I think it's been working ok (but not in any way revolutionary).

As I read this thread however I get the impression that the image is used in the Q-field to trigger the memory and the story. I also find that the pictures themselves contains clues to fragments/components of the characters (e.g 0283 'escape'). Is this working? Will you, when you see the character out of this context remember the keyword? (which purpose is to help you distinguish the character and it's meaning, right?)

It feels a little bit the same as (without pictures) putting the components of the character in the Q-field along with the keyword. Of course you would get high retention, because you get more info. The question is if the end result is as good?

This is not criticism, just a (slightly skeptic) inquiry.

Finally, would it be better, worse or the same if one was to use pictures that represents the keyword but not any hints to the characters components? (like the ones used for 'one', 'two', 'day', 'rice field' etc in the pic-thread)

Even more finally; Isn't possible that you inhibit the 'vivid story' long term memorization of the character when you have such a strong link as a picture? What I mean is that for me the first one or two repetitions are really easy because the character is still very visible in my head (without the story). It takes time to get the story imprinted. Heck, for young (immature) cards I get the feeling that my memory connects Keyword->Character->Story while for mature cards that snappy memory is gone and I associate Keyword->Story->Character (as it's supposed to be). Now, could a picture cause you to think you know the character really well (in the beginning) but after a while it's completely gone (because the story wasn't as thoroughly imprinted)??

Wow that was a lot of me thinking too hard too late. I hope I made some sense at least Wink

Yes, the image is in the Q-field. (Well I can't speak for stoked, but I'm the curator of the 'one hanzi, one picture' sister thread and I put the image in the Q-field.) This isn't quite the same as having the primitives printed out, right there to read since you do have to examine the image if that's what you're looking for, and if you really know the character then it comes to you before you have time to do that anyway.

I can scratch my head and come up with more theory to explain it, but the practical answer is just no, it generally does not inhibit (my) long term memory, or recollection of the character later. When it comes down to it, beyond learning the writing RTK is just scaffolding for learning their real meaning and usage later, in context. The image provides another alternative scaffolding structure that may provide more assistance to those individuals (such as myself) with stronger visual memories than imaginative.

Make sense?

Yes, very much so. Thank you.

I will give having the keyword and the picture in the Q-field a try.

Hopefully it also makes the reviewing less of a 'chore' and more fun (pictures usually are).

I think you've got the idea, but in case it helps here is a screen shot from my Anki review:

It's now almost two months since starting to use picture-cards. I would just like to say (for anyone with the same questions as I had above) that it works great. Just finished my 3000th card and I seriously think I wouldn't have made it without the pics. As mafried more or less put it the image creates an extra link when creating your internal character-database. It definitely adds to both speed and retention. I'm now using pictures for all kinds of cards, not just characters.

If uncertain, one can always try for a week and then _try_ to go back.

Does anyone know if a finished deck of these was ever uploaded to anki? Looking at the dates on the posts it seems things might have run out of steam a little, but it also sounds as if one or two people managed to finish it off themselves. Anyone have a link to a shared deck?

I am currently creating an Anki deck for myself as I go through each Kanji. I'm only on 0071, so it might take a while. Smile I looked for a completed deck beforehand but couldn't find one. Silly me didn't realize until now that stoked didn't finish the project. Too bad! But I'm really grateful this much was completed. Helps a lot!! Thank you.

Hi Guys, I spent today linking all the pics together from the packs from other people so that we can easily append them to our current anki decks.

There are 1556 pictures. So we still need 700 to get the 2200 RTK1.

Download:

Images+importlist:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5267...tkpics.zip

Just the importlist (for those who already have the pics):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5267...TKpics.txt

Instructions:

IMAGES
Copy the images to your media folder, which is somewhere like this:
G:\Documents\Anki\User 1\collection.media
If you're stuck and can't find it:
In anki click Tools>addons>open addons folder.
From here go up one folder to get to the main Anki folder, then just select your user. You should be able to see the collection.media folder from here.

PREPARE
Load up anki and go into the card browser. Select your kanji deck and open up the 'Fields' window.
Make sure that the field with the kanji (and only the kanji) in it is position 1 on the list.
Make a new 'Image' field.
IMPORTANT
In the card browser, add the image field somewhere to your cards so you can see them. If you don't this, the import will skip some rows! (I have no idea why)

IMPORT!
Now go back to the main menu and choose file->import. Select the RTKpics.txt file.
In the import window, Select the correct card type (that matches your kanji deck) and select your kanji deck.
Ensure 'Fields separated by:Tab'
In the combo box, select 'Update existing cards when first field matches'.
Ensure 'Allow HTML in fields' is ticked.
Map the fields:
Field 1 is to the first field in your card, the one with just the kanji
Field 2 is the image, map that to the image field you created earlier.
press import!
