RTK1: One kanji, one picture discussion

#51
One of my innumerous hobbies is observing and studying plants. So, when I went to Japan for the first time, last year, I was amazed by a certain tree with beautiful pink flowers. Unfortunately, I couldn't discover its name.

A few months later, I came across the Japanese Judas-tree kanji, which seemed so distant to me... But it was ok, I managed to memorize it through Heisig's story.

And just a few minutes ago, I was taking a look at your "One kanji, one picture" project, and what a nice surprise to be able to link those two pieces! Smile

Thanks a lot, and keep doing this great job.

I've implemented an Import into RevTK feature in the Insert Story Links and Pictures script. I also corrected the Story with Line Breaks script to play nice with the former.

After downloading the latest versions (start with the latter, or else open the Tools/Greasemonkey/Manage User Scripts dialog and drag and drop it to the top), an Import button will appear near the top of each page in the RTK1: One kanji, one picture thread. Enter the first and last frame number that you wish to import and push the button.

The current method is prohibitively slow (the upside is that it won't choke the website), as I'm not aware of an efficient method to bulk load stories. It takes 8 minutes to import the first 200 pictures. The process however can be interrupted and restarted at any moment. Simply close the page (tab/window) in progress, and revisit the study page or the aforementioned forum thread at a better moment.

Your old stories will not be overwritten, as the imported picture stories are appended below any previous stories, separated by an empty line. It's advisable to install the line breaks script mentioned earlier to get things nicely displayed. The same script will also put up a warning if the story breaks the 512 byte limit, which will interrupt the import. Click the edit area, shorten the story (or throw out the picture), and after updating, the import process will continue with the next frame.

Don't be afraid to import the same frame numbers twice. The second import will simply replace the previous one, provided you didn't mess with the signature (the username/date combo added below the picture) and left the empty line that separates different stories. Changes you made to the picture story will be lost, but on the upside, it allows to get the latest versions of stoked's stories in case any changes are made (such as typo corrections).

Note that any public stories you had will now include the picture stories too, which may not be a desired effect. I have no immediate solution for that. You could create a new account, but then you lose your scheduling info.

The picture stories are all attributed to stoked (or to be correct, to the user who puts up the messages in that thread), even if a lot of the actual stories are actually borrowed from others. That's simply the way it is.

I succesfully imported all picture stories to my testing account. Actually I had little choice, as Firefox didn't allow me to cancel the import halfway. If I closed the tab or hit the browser's stop button, then changed the frame numbers to 1 and 1 and reimport, Firefox would ignore the new request, instead continuing where it left off previously. Must be some powerful caching. Never mind, the next version of the script will have a remove button, as well as a way to store and view everything locally, not on the server, making the import furiously fast, though less editable (and less "global").

Stoked, for all I admire your creative way of picking pictures, can I ask you to follow a more standard way of typing out stories? Capital letters where expected, bold for keywords, italic for primitives. The audience will love you even more.

Edit: Just realized I was logged in as woelpad on the forum site, and woelpad_nl on the kanji site, which may explain why the process was never cancelled. Silly mistake.

Once again, Woelpad, I'm in awe of your wizardry and generosity. I suspect I use every* previous greasemonkey script created by you or the-artist-formerly-known-as-Ricardo. This script, and the creative Stoked, unfortunately arrived a bit too late for my benefit, but I wanted to acknowledge all of your efforts nonetheless. (unless Fabrice's site explodes or something, that is ... :-)

*edit: Er, make that half of the scripts... there now appears to be 15 of them!

Stoked, more typos found. Did you notice my request for changing the way you write stories in my previous message? A simple "I'll consider it" will do.

Thora, all of them? I'm honored. Even if you don't need it (as do I), you might still be compelled to install the next version of the Story Links and Pictures script. The Import command now has an on server checkbox, by default unchecked. Leave it unchecked and import all stories. Should only take a minute (buttons are disabled while processing).

Then go to RevTK and visit one of the frames you just imported. Right below the story box, there'll now be a Picture stories compartment containing stoked's picture story. Note that there's no star or report icon, only a copy icon. The behavior of this copy button is slightly different from its standard behavior: When copying, the picture story is appended to the end of the story in the story box, no overwrite, and has a signature attached to it. This behavior is similar to that of the Copy Story script, which BTW I also had to adapt a little in order to work correctly together. If you have the Copy Story script and want to use its buttons on the picture story (not really a necessity), make sure that the Copy Story script is listed after Story Links and Pictures in Greasemonkey's management panel.

If you have already imported all picture stories to the server, but prefer the new approach (which I recommend), do the following. Check the on server checkbox and enter the complete range (from 1 to 1314 currently) of imported stories, then press the remove button. This will take another hour. Then uncheck the on server checkbox and import all stories once more.

If you have no use for a certain picture or are appalled by it, you can either explicitly remove the frame, similar to the procedure described above (but keeping on server unchecked), or, much easier, you can push the triangle in the header of the Picture stories compartment. The script is smart enough to keep it hidden even if the page is reloaded, unlike the triangle button for Newest and updated stories (no criticism).

Have fun.

@woelpad:

Sorry for my late reply but I've got a new job and it kept me busy. I'm on SRS holiday for now to keep reviews down. At the same time I increased immersion. I'll add more kanjis in about a week.

Your script is great. It's not of much use for me because I prefer Anki over RevTK but if it helps others that's superb! Your request: I'll use Capital letters from now on, not a problem. I won't do the "bold for keywords, italic for primitives" thing anymore though, sorry. I did it at the beginning but it's too much work for no real advantage.

I'll correct the typos now. Thanks for your feedback and the scripts. Awesome!

Can we get the "one kanji, one picture" thread stickied? I'm using it on a daily basis (I'm sure I'm not the only one) and I'm finding it annoying to have to scroll down and find the thread each time I visit... I assume this is a resource that's of value to more than just stoked and I.

stoked, you did an excelent job with the "one kanji one picture" thread. It helps a BUNCH, really!

I don't think I could study RTK without your thread.

would it be possible/allowed/wanted, to split the thread in tinier bits?
it takes ages to load with more than 600 pics per page.

not everyplace on this world offers fast and broad internetconnections.
smaller pages would be very helpful

f.e.:
1-250
251-500
501-750
751-1000
1001-1250
1251-1500
1500-1750
1751-end

if this brings up the problem with the forum navigation (1,2 .... 6,7) maybe 4 pages would be better? 500/page would still be a big improvement compared to over 600 / page.

thank you for the thread anyhow!!!!!!

(meanwhile, while writing this post, the page should be done ;-)

I've been annoyed by that too and I think the best solution should be to save the pages to your computer - that way we won't be taxing for the image server either. So uh, anyone know how to do that? I can't really find the option in Firefox (it's probably super obvious because I'm dumb). Ideally, a mini-guide linked right at the start of the thread describing how to solve this for tech failers like me would be nice.

Thanks for making a great tool Stoked (&co), it's probably more helpful than you realize yourself!

Change your forum settings. See reply #35. Even if it affects all threads, I find 16 per page quite sufficient. Or install the Story Links and Pictures script, download them once and watch them one at a time, in or beneath the story box for the corresponding frame.

Yea, I like what Stoked is doing with the pics but I haven't looked at them in forever because my computer freezes.

Well, turns out the save page function IS super obvious in Firefox (right under File) but I didn't get it to work so I dug up https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/427 which does exactly what I wanted. (thanks anyway woelpad)

Are there any plans to post the final 500 or so Kanji from RtK1? Or are they in another thread that I'm just not finding?

Of course, yes. Expect the next 100 kanji on the weekend.

興 = Entertain

Wenn I looked at this Kanji the first time, I thought at once of a Ghettoblaster. On the left and right side are the speakers and on the downside the table or feet, in the middel the hifi itself.

Yeha, 興 is pretty easy to remember, eh? Wink

Huh, so that didn't work out. But hey, I've got a good excuse. She's called Céline.

Are there any plans on finishing the thread? It doesn't look like stoked has posted since August. I've found it tremendously helpful, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

I used the greasemonkey script to import the pictures and stories and it worked like a charm! However, can anyone help this technically impoverished soul with some instructions on how to add the pictures to the cards for those pictures that either don't show? I tried pasting a link or using the copy/paste but so far, I can find a way to add the pictures! Thanks.Smile

The second message in the thread Woelpad's scripts, one of the sticky threads in the Feedback section, contains a description for each script. Always check there first.

Quoting: "To insert pictures in your stories, put curly brackets around the url."

Actually if you would install the Copy Story script as well, you could copy one of the picture stories and see how it appears in your story box.

I wrote a script to extract the kanji, keywords and stories and imported them into Anki, and I've just finished learning them. I have RTK1, but these stories seem much more effective and are easier to use because I don't have to type them up or make up my own stories.

Another thread has lead me to believe these are the top-rated ones on RvTK. If so, is there any way I could get the rest of the keywords, kanji and stories (I don't want pictures), the ones not in the picture thread, as plain text?

Thanks :)

Copy every top story to your story box, then export it using the My Stories export button. Or learn how to write a script that leafs through several pages.
