iKnow vocabulary Anki deck

#1
Hello - I'm new to RtK. This forum and website, along with the RtK books seem like the most efficient way to study kanji and I hope I can progress as fast as some here.

I had a question regarding studying vocabulary with Anki. I've been using iKnow for about a month now, and while its a good resource to start and introduce vocab., it doesn't offer much for review. I saw a thread posted on here about extracting the Core series vocabulary and making an Anki deck with it. I was wondering if there was such a deck available for download.

Appreciate the help.

Check that thread. I believe it was posted earlier today to that thread.

Check out the "Copyrighted Works" section:

(I believe that it requires registration to see that particular section)

Yes, I think that site doesn't exist anymore

So how do I import iKnow stuff?

For a start, I wanted to import this list:

http://www.iknow.co.jp/lists/24134

I read this and I guess I need the second plugin, right? And then...how to do it? I'm worried it messes up my deck...

I've got Anki open with my one and only deck, the Heisig example RTK1+3 deck. I'd like to import this iKnow list to the same deck. Do I have to create a model first? Will it mess up my Heisig cards? How do I do it? I've got a backup of my deck but yet I'm a bit worried....huh.

Any help is appreciated! Smile

Make a new deck if you're not sure what to do for starters. It's what I do whenever I test a plugin. I'm going to try to make one and post a link here (unless some else is kind enough to do it first ^_^.

When you install the plugin, it creates a new model, called "iKnow JP". It shouldn't affect your deck at all. I mean, besides adding more cards to it.

Thanks. I tried both, and both works. Awesome!

In the plugin code it says:

Quote:Note the readings are from iKnow, which means that in some cases a katakana word in the expression will be rendered into Hiragana in the reading. Also, iKnow adds spaces between words in the reading.
Is this a big problem? Like, would I learn the reading wrong sometimes b/c there is no katakana? Remember, I'm a beginner. Therefore all those silly question... :\

No, hiragana and katakana is the same except for some extremely extremely rare cases (I doubt there's a single instance in iKnow where a katakana word can't be 100% properly written in hiragana).

Exactly the answer I was hoping for...yay! Thanks! Smile

Actually, it's possible that ディ is used... while でぃ is the same thing, it isn't used in hiragana so it looks a bit odd. But yeah, at least it works Smile

It doesn't hurt your deck, true. For some reason though, whenever I try to use the script on a deck that already has cards in get error messages. Right now, I'm loading the info into a dummy deck. I only needed the image files, so it's not too much of a problem.

Edit:

Ironically, I ended up downloading 2147 cards (eh?) and not a single image.

Does anyone has a link to the images they can spot me?

The new plugin doesn't download the images due to copyright restrictions. It creates a reference link instead. The new plugin also downloads the items along with the sentences in it. Therefore you might have flashcards with the word/meaning/kanji and flashcards with just the sentences.

I thought we were allowed to use the images from the core vocabulary...

Oh well... I got half. I guess I'll try to run the original script another day to set if it will get the rest (lots of errors). This stuff takes a while.

I currently have all the sentences and media from http://ajatt.pseudosphere.net/index.php even though the site died.

There were 3 decks which I still have and I also combined all 3 decks into a bigger deck. I also have some sentences from KO2001.

The combined deck of iKnow+KO2001 is about 8000 cards. If you want any of these just shoot me an email.

I think you can use the Google cache to get those links, oddly enough (Google has a skeleton key, apparently).

Is there any way to filter out the flashcards so as to keep only the ones with the sentences? I can't find a way to parse them right after they have been imported into Anki.

Thanks!

Unless Resolve got a nasty-gram from iKnow about his plug-in, I'm not sure the reason behind not downloading images from iKnow. We assume all images are CC. If not, iKnow (Cerego actually) should at the least block the RSS feed for lists with controlled information.

For the last few days, I've been using the iKnow list with Anki. I am VERY pleased with the results. It's set up to do dictation and reading. I'm average about 150 cards an hour reviewing. I was going to use iKnow to initially review new words, but that's not going to be necessary. These last few updates from Anki have been amazing.

Is anyone having trouble with the iknow plugins? I can't get the original plugin to work at all anymore, and the new one throws an error before getting all of the cards. I also don't like how the new one adds huge amounts of material; I only want sentences.

Here is Kirk's answer on image licensing:

http://developer.iknow.co.jp/forum/read/30074

As a result I uploaded a new version of the plugin which doesn't download images by default. Individual users can change it if they wish, but they are responsible for their own actions.

If you're having problems with the plugin, post the error on the Anki forum. I don't check this forum all the time.
