However you did say you wanted otaku culture stuff. Genshiken was already tossed into the mix and few others I will have to check out myself. "Battle Programmer Shirase" sorta fits into that catagory. Not a great series IMHO, but to each his own.

Funny thing is, it reminds me exactly of the anime society at my university (obviously I'm a bit like Kousaka...ermm yeh..)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but Baccano! is one (of many) incredible anime series, and it's "non-typical", even though term is about as vague as it gets.

If I'm not mistaken, nobody has mentioned Durarara!! yet.

The series follows several unusual characters in Ikebukuro's underground night life, among them a headless rider (or dullahan).

The anime is still currently airing and is based on a series of light novels.

I'm waiting for Durarara!! to complete before I watch it. I do that with every anime series that I think looks good. It's definitely on my list.

Most shows on the noitaminA block are somewhat "non-typical" which is more or less the point - "It was launched with the intention of expanding the target audience beyond the typical young male demographic." There's some solid gold in there. If you enjoyed the surrealism of Mononoke, 2009's Kuuchuu Buranko is done in a similar style, albeit as a really freaking funny comedy revolving around psychiatry.

Also, Monster is FACE MELTINGLY GOOD.

Giant Killing is very good. Has some of the most interesting character development of the season. And the soccer is good, too.

Another vote for Durarara!!! I don't know how you can wait until it finishes, You'll end up watching the whole thing in one weekend and ruining it.

Also, another show airing now that looks great is "Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei" It is from Yuasa Masaaki, who has a unique style. (Kaiba, Kemonozume).

　Ｉ'm not a fan of sport anime... or at least I wasn't until I watched Ookiku Furikabutte (I think it's English title is The Big Windup). That series was/is (second season running now) absolutely amazing. I just want to randomly vent and say that I was just listening to some electronic music, thinking this particular work seemed like it'd be generic but I'd give it a try anyway, and they kept playing samples of what seemed like and which I confirmed to be a recent, English-dubbed anime. I... can't express how repulsive that is to me. I mean back in the '90s or something, I guess Atari Teenage Riot could've gotten away with it. But now? No. This will not stand.

Although in retrospect let's face it, vocal samples from videos, period, are played out, yo. They are not dope.

I'm not a fan of sports at all, but I ended up getting sucked into watching about 12 episodes of Ookiku Furikabutte... One of my favourite artists on devart convinced me to do so with a combination of great fan art and a comment like "this is my favouite show EVER!" I stopped because the show seemed to shift completely to baseball at that point, but anyway... It was pretty good.
But I've got to stop watching shows because of the fan art XP I just wasted 103 episodes worth of time watching D.gray-man because of the nice fan art out there.

Yeah, but still many times shorter than an endless shounen! Besides, 10 episodes go by so fast when the story gets exciting. I was literally on the edge of my seat for episode 37 and 38.

Monster holds a special place in my heart. Same with all of Urasawa's work.

Deep, compelling storytelling can make a series seem so much longer than these 5000 episode fight anime/manga (where 50 chapters = one battle). Legend of the Galactic Heroes is another like that, it was 'only' 100+ episodes, but felt like it was hundreds in my memory. Bleach and Naruto on the other hand, seems like just yesterday I read the first chapters.

Dunno if you are still interested, but I second all the otaku anime suggestions, and add "Comic Party" (a TV series about doujinshi makers), "Cosplay Complex" (a 3-episode OVA about a cospay club) and "Otaku no Video" (a 2-episode OVA spoofing the hardcore otaku, mixed with a live-action documentary about otaku).

Satoshi Kon Dies at 46 (24-08-2010)

Yeah, the day he died, one of my friends sent me a text informing me. I was really down.

I'm not a big anime fan, so to me, most anime are typical. However, I think Satoshi Kon's work is the epitome of non-typical anime. In fact, my friend and I always complain, "Why is this anime!" because we look like dorks for liking it, and we can't convince "normal" people to watch it.

Nestor - have you read any of the novels of Galactic Heroes? I think you posted a link to a wikipedia article about Galactic Heroes recently, and I thought the series looked really interesting. I was really intrigued by the description of one of the characters as someone who joined the military to pay for his school tuition so he could become a historian. I want to be a historian and considered joining the military to pay for my tuition (though I don't think I'll be doing that). Have you read/seen Crest of the Stars? That's another space opera.

I really like Berserk as well, but I think that IS a typical anime. Still, within the shell of anime crap is a core of stuff that makes me like it in the first place. Anything with music by Susumu Hirasawa is probably good.

Tokyo Godfathers and Paranoïa Agent will always remain my favorites.
He had so many things left in him...

When I think "non-typical" I think of stuff like Kaiba or Windy Tales (風人物語).
Cowboy Bebop and Champloo are mainstream anime.

Yeah, but that brings up the question of what makes an anime "non-typcial". I think most people here consider an anime "non-typical" even if it is popular just as long as it is different to many other anime.
