10 hours of studying a day

That's awesome to hear. I'm always so frustrated constantly, but clearly I don't know enough. Once you can sort of piece things together from other knowledge I imagine it becomes more intuitive and rewarding.

You know, today I was watching "My Girl" because it was recommended as one of the easiest JDramas. While I still don't understand half of it, it's awesome to finally understand some of it. It made me really happy today to know that I was getting somewhere, even if it's as small as understanding some basic knowledge. Khatzumoto talks about "small victories" and I think this is definitely key. But I think I went a bit off-topic so I'll just end it here. I hope someday soon I can try studying as hard as 10 hours a day.

Haha I think you're quite on topic still. 10 hours a day is really all about small victories passively washing up on the shores of your linguistic mind.

In my opinion 10 hours a day is a bit vague, it seems many also include passive Japanese, that does count as a plus, but doesn't equal actual studying. Also being in Japan, I wonder, lots of everyday Japanese text is all the same, unless you take different routes everywhere, everyday to many different places or have much variation in your job. Also the amount of study required differs from person to person, and whether you SRS everything once a day, or spread multiple sessions, thus repeating failed cards more.

About me: There've been periods that I studied iKnow for 3 hours, did Anki for another 1,5~2,5 hours, e-mailed some pen pals for 2~3 hours total and watched up to 3 hours of dorama or anime episodes, so I've reached 8~10 hours regularly too. Nowadays, after about 15 months since I started (I've completed the Core 6000, and am now at 400 cards of Core 10,000, about 1000 of my own cards and about 900 RTK cards) I feel the need to do active study disappearing as the new material becomes less and less useful, yet do certain books or movies strike me as of I know but basic Japanese. I'm down to the usual 2-3 hour SRS session and about an hour of passive Japanese, aside from all my electronic devices set in Japanese. Maybe it's a small dip, I've been awfully motivated for the first 10 months. I started to slag after I finally reached the end of Core 600 and finally managed to pick up a (much lower) pace again about a month ago.

Wait..

How is reading magazines, novel, manga, watching anime studying??

I watch Japanese youtube videos and anime, just leave it on, read Japanese websites/books..

occasionally...I will try to memorize vocab. But It just comes naturally after seeing a word many times.

So all in all I "study" about 5 minutes a day.

But I surround myself in Japanese as much as I can.

I have other interests like trumpet and I have to do schoolwork, so there's no way I could do more than 2 hours a day during the schoolyear.
