I play! Or plan to, anyway, though I can't find the energy lately. Only at my club, I'm not much for tournaments. I'm a member of the go club in Eindhoven, and my level is about 9th Kyu.
Playing go never made me want to learn Japanese though, to be honest. I really got motivated however when I got into anime as a hobby much later on.

i mostly decided to learn japanese for anime, manga, h-games and games, but i want to read japanese go-books as wel.
astridtops made a fair description what go is about.
but in ore detail go is a board game, where the aim it to SUROUND more territory then your opponent, its a land grabing game of sorts.
unlike many other strategy games like chess and checkers where where the aim is to reduce the pieces of your opponent, you start with an empty board of 19x19 grids where the aim is to build.
there is a manga and anime called hikaru no go that deals with this game, go check it out maybe you like it!

Hikaru no Go got me interested in it...but I haven't played since last year. I had a Hikaru no Go video game but it was in Japanese so I didn't really grasp the rules -_-;
It's fun and addictive, but it was just a phase, I guess. I bet I could start agian, though^^
