FACEBOOK

Just had a great idea. We should create a group on facebook. I know you all have a facebook, and, if you don't have one, you ARE getting one. lol...
Seriously though, we should create one. I noticed there's already one for the book "remembering the kanji" (perhaps some of you are already in that group?). But we should create one for people who are members of the Reviewing the Kanji community.
Also, I noticed that facebook can be advantageous to studying Japanese since you can change the language to Japanese and a whole bunch of other languages (they even have pirate english, it's hilarious...)
Anyways, just wondering what you thought of my idea.

"if you don't have one, you ARE getting one"

With my recent bout of indecisiveness it's a relief you could make that decision for me. LOL

I don't have Facebook and I'm not going to get it.

What are you talking about? The decision's already been made Wink.

There is no arguing your way out of this one.

When on facebook, the definition of 'friend' generally changes to 'person that you know the existence of'

Sort of like RTK, now that I think about it!

You're not 'friends' with the kanji until you learn the readings and compounds -- but once you add a kanji to your Heisig deck, you've accepted its facebook friend request, and you can get to know what it looks like, the general idea of the meaning...

Yeah, I used to be one of those people who was completely against facebook and HATED the word itself (and myspace, which I still protest because it's CREEPY...), but once my friend forced me to get Facebook, I was completely addicted. Trust me, if you get it, you'll get addicted.
And the whole "friend vs. person that you know exists," is so true. It's so creepy when a random person that you are "friends" with (but you actually just heard that person's name mentioned by a friend of a friend a year and a half ago) goes and comments on one of your pictures. I feel violated when that happens. Stupid FACEBOOK stalkers.
Anyways, I know it'll be just be another thing that'll take away from our time actually studying Japanese, but it'll be sooo awesome. We should totally do it.

I'm pretty sure I have a Facebook account, because I think I tried some Japanese addon thingy on it. But so far, I've never really had a reason to use it.

If you guys start this, count me in... Anything's worth trying once, right?

@ konakona50: lol, sorry...

I took the liberty of creating the group. It's called "Reviewing the Kanji" (original, eh?). If anybody wants to be an officer, just tell me (because I don't really feel qualified to be in charge of this whole thing. Any ideas are welcome.
Oh yeah, and I couldn't figure out what picture to put as the group picture since it would be some sort of violation if I put just some picture off of googleimages or something.

You could just not add people you aren't at least acquaintances with. Everyone on my list is either a classmate (that I actually chat with) or an actual friend/person who I party with. Even still I've managed to rack up nearly 200 people in the year and a half I've had an account. By adding people onto your facebook you are basically inviting them to look at pictures of you and read what you're doing.

I'd have to at LEAST meet you people in real life before I'd consider adding you Tongue

As a sidenote, you can change Facebook's interface to Japanese

I had Facebook but it seemed kind of boring compared to Myspace. Myspace interface can be in Japanese as well.

They made a new layout (which sucks!) and later removed the old one that I liked..
Now we're stuck with the new one.
Did I mention that it sucks?

I too feel a awkward about adding people that I really don't know IRL..
Just got a friend request from someone who I think is a son of an acquaintenance..
I have never even met the kid! What is that?!

Also the whole system can bite you in the hide if you don't give it the attention it needs.
I didn't visit my page for about a year and when I did, someone had posted it full of pornish clips and screwed up jokes.
At that point it was time for the "fun wall" to go..

The new layout is to increase ad views (every time you click on a tab you get new ads); its not going away.

Just a note to remind people you can be part of a facebook group without being "friends" with the other people in it...
