Ehm... I think our OP was either trying to troll or sell a bad textbook (dude, you know way too many resources to not be serious about stuff.)
My two cents, sentences (or anything) without understanding is a waste. Textbooks don't need to give that understanding though. Then again, the beginner stuff isn't really that good online or in grammar dictionaries, so you have to choose your flavor or slug it out.
I, also, think that studying from a list of grammar points (which is essentially what a lot of textbooks offer) is something best used in conjunction with learning Japanese from real material. It's my opinion that the two work together to create an effective learning strategy - of course, this varies and some people get more benefit from more of one or the other (or something completely different).
P.s., Half way through "Swept Away" now. Damn Madonna's arms are stacked in this film. She'd totally kick that other guys a... pro-wrestling style.

P.s., The scene where she shoots the flare gun into the boat was hilarious. The Japanese voice actor was like いやぁぁぁ... It was a golden moment.
