This book (IMHO) is the most useful text I encountered for learning Japanese. Going through the entries in my first year living in Japan meant close to 100% ability in basic sentence structure... and combined with the intermediate book (which in places is a huge step up in difficulty/rarity) you are pretty much set in *any* situation. Get it in Japan, and it is like $25! I always hated English grammar, but learning Japanese in this respect is really fun - and made the aquisition and utilization of new vocabulary a breeze. For Kanji I have Heisig (after 3 years, it was time to start!), but vocab... well, I just use my ears (but a good list to study from, in order of importance, would still be a great asset).
