How to start learning Kanji with RTK1+Anki

#1
Hi everyone,

I just found this site and signed up to the forum to ask you all for some learning advice.
Perhaps a little personal introduction and outline of my goals would be in order.

I'm a 34 year old guy working in the Visual Effects for Film industry in Wellington, New Zealand.
My primary languages are dutch and english and I'm fluent in both.
It is my goal to eventually find a job in my field of expertise in Japan so I may work and live there. The country, the people, the culture and of course the language I find immensely fascinating.
So recently I've started taking some 'Japanese for Beginners' classes here in Wellington and am thoroughly enjoying the learning process. So far we've been learning the reading and writing of the Hiragana, some basic words written with them, and a few practical, everyday-use sentences.
Now I'd like to kick it up a notch and start learning Kanji and the Heisig books seem to be the way to go about it. I understand the first book teaches you "only" the meaning and writing, but not the reading. And I'm okay with that.... one thing at a time. Smile

I've also downloaded Anki for my Mac and was wondering how Anki would best complement my studies when progressing through RTK1. Is it best to build one's own deck of cards, adding to the deck every with every new Kanji learned? Or do I use one of the pre-made decks readily available online?
I'm still new to the SRS system of learning so pardon me if my question seems a bit trivial.
Furthermore, I'd would love and appreciate any advice, hints and tips coming from RTK veterans before I embark on this massive journey. Smile

Thank you for your time,
Lone Deranger

Ok. Linking to a search sucks here.

Search the forum for "tips".

There's a pre-made deck right in the Anki install. I'm using that.

You can also forgo anki and use this site. Rtk is a long journey but if you keep it up, it will be worth it in the end. Good luck.

I recommend this site over Anki for RTK1, mostly because of how well the SRS is integrated with the part of the site where everybody shares stories... I got stuck on stories all the time and found the ones here extremely valuable. And if one doesn't work for you, you can always switch to another one in just a couple of clicks. In my opinion, this added convenience outweighs the advantages of Anki.

Anki's still awesome, though. I use it for everything else. Maybe it'd be possible to write a plugin for Anki that interfaces to this site for the same integrated convenience?

I'm keeping my deck and my review schedule on anki and my stories on this site. The anki deck keyword is a link to the stories page of the site, so I can quickly edit my story if I want to.
