Place to watch anime with JP subs?

#1
Perhaps I'm impatient but watching RAW anime and only understanding the 'word' ます gets rather old after a while, so I was hoping there might be a place on the internet where I can find these shows with Japanese subs.

The main trigger for wanting to finally get off the ground with speaking is because has anyone seen the new Yakuza 3 trailer?! Looks awesome, but most of the speech is on the fly rather than reeling so I'd basically have a terrible time (I'm testing myself with the original Yakuza... ain't pretty).

And anyway, I was a big anime fan but made a pledge to myself a while ago about not watching any unless it's completely in Japanese. And I can stands no more. Thanks.

Edit - Oh yeah, and I'm not too savvy with downloads and torrents and things so if we can avoid that kind of thing then that'd be great.

Anime downloads without torrents? I don't think I've ever seen such a thing. I usually get my anime from http://www.tokyotosho.com/ . They have pretty much anything anime related but I've never seen anime with Japanese subs, just have a few movies with Japanese subtitles. Even if your not savvy with torrents, it really doesn't take much time to learn how to use them and the benefits can be huge.. uTorrent is the most popular and imo, the easiest to use.

There was another thread about this. Basically the Japanese subs are available for a handful of anime and drama, so look through those lists and see if you find something you like. For other shows, instead, you can find the script (not in subtitle form), which is just as good in my opinion, if not better.

Yakuza 3 looks awesome.

Have you seen this trailer? It's not the official TGS one: http://www.gamersyde.com/stream_8933_en.html

Anyways, your best bet is to find subtitles online. Here's one source: http://kitsunekko.net/JapaneseAnimeSubtitles.aspx

Is Yakuza 3 the one set in the past (龍が如く見参!) or the new modern one (龍が如く3)?

I think a lot of stuff is broadcast with subtitles (if there's the little 字幕放送 in the corner of the screen), but unless someone actually records those as well as the program you might not have much luck. Except maybe by some chance someone making Japanese subs as well, or taking English subs and a Japanese transcript and making them yourself?

Given how many anime fans seem to want to learn Japanese, I'm surprised you can't find more stuff like Japanese subtitled anime (even if it's just a scene or two and some kind of explaination). I guess no one really wants to take the effort to teach things beyond "onee-chan" and "itadakimasu".

It's the modern one.

I think you're right, I should. For a nerd I'm unnaturally bad with computers.

Oh sorry, I should have looked harder.

Thanks for the thread. I've downloaded thoses Death Note scripts but I have no clue what to do next.

If it's not too much trouble could someone in the know give me an idiot-proof explanation as to how I'm meant to get those DN eps up and running? (I was a big fan of the manga but it was costing me too much... may as well settle with the anime).

Yeah I have, looks so good. It actually looks like a Shenmue game. I love the way they've done away with the 'tray' like camera from the first game and have given it a fully moving one. I feel so much more immersed when it's like that.

Here's 20 whole minutes of footage:

http://www.seganerds.com/2008/10/10/tgs-...3-footage/

(I only watched the first quarter because I still haven't played 2 and I think something's already been spoiled...)

Ugh, I know. "sakurafan1982: 'oh mai god i dont even study japanese but i actually understood half of that xDD i watch 2 much anime ^-^' kawaii!!

Shut up sakurafan1982! Big Grin (sakurafan1982 is an entirely fictional character... but you know someone, somewhere with the exact same user name said that exact same line).

Anyway, I was really pleased last night to find out my crappy cheap version of Spirited Away (as opposed to the posh Studio Ghibli collection one) actually has Japanese subtitles! What's more, it was an American region 1 disk AND it played on my Japanese PS3!

Since it's a script and not subtitles, you have to have them on the side, they aren't timed. So just download/buy Death Note and watch it in Japanese, when you don't understand a line or something, bring up the script and read it.

Oh right. Is there really no place where I can get proper subtitles that appear on screen?

At this point I'm not fussy at all about what it is... can be a documentary on cardboard so long as it's in Japanese and has JP subs.

No, the Death Note ones are timed. I've been using them. Where did you get them from? Download the file [LiouMing]Death Note[1-24].jap.ass.zip from this site. The files are in .ssa format IIRC, you simply need to rename the file to match the avi you've downloaded, eg

[darkside-raws]DEATH_NOTE_01.avi
[darkside-raws]DEATH_NOTE_01.ssa

Your player should detect the subs automatically if they're in the same folder. I use windows media player classic.

Edit: and for the record, all the files on that particular website are timed appear-on-the-screen subs. None of them are scripts.

Oh that's good to know. I'll try and get it off the ground then.

Can you tell me a good method to download the actual episodes? I typed in 'darkside death note' into Google and found a torrent which I think has eps 1 - 12, but over 1.5 hours into it it's only downloaded 0.3%. :>(

To download successfully using torrents:

1. Use a good torrent software. uTorrent is pretty much unbeatable currently.
2. Find a good torrent, which means there should be a lot of seeders, and hopefully some leechers too.
3. Find the torrent on a good site so you know it's a properly made torrent.
4. Open your ports. Torrenting is useless if you're behind a firewall, your firewall and router needs to be set to let the traffic through on those ports.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post direct links at this site, but I wouldn't recommend using google, there are many good proper sites for anime torrents.

animesuki.com is awesome and quasi-legal because it doesn't serve licensed anime (unfortunately Deathnote is licensed, so it can not be downloaded from that site).

Good advice in the post above.

Use http://portforward.com/routers.htm to help open your port for uTorrent.

If you live in the US, Hulu has all 37 episodes of Death Note.

Virtua_Leaf is in the UK, so Hulu won't work.

At least not legitimately.

- Okay, I've downloaded uTorrent.
- Animesuki looks good for finding decent torrents (looking at 'Daa! Daa! Daa!' at the moment).
- Would opening ports affect my router in any way? It took me ages to get it working (tech dunce) and I'd kick myself if I messed something up.

Also, how exactly do I use uTorrent? There so many tags and numbers... do I just download an anime torrent, open with uTorrent then wait? What should I do if it goes extremely slow (ie. says 30 days remain)?

And I'll definitely check out this Hulu thing (animesuki didn't allow pretty much anything I searched).

EDIT - Oh and as a side, is there a decent reliable site for anime reviews?

When you download a torrent a window will open asking where you want to save the file and show a window at the bottom with all the files you're downloading in that torrent. You can usually just go ahead and click OK to start it, unless there's some files you don't want, in which case you just uncheck the arrow beside it. Then just make an Anime folder and sub folders for different anime and save them there.

Once the torrent starts, click on the General tab and you can see "Seeds:" and "Peers:" to the right. The seeders are the people who have finished the D/L and are just uploading now and the peers are people who are D/Ling and U/Ling the file. If there are very few seeds/peers then it will probably be slow. Torrents usually start out pretty slow and then speed up. You should set your upload to about 60-80% of your max upload speed. For me, my max download is 2MB/s and I can only upload at 90kbps so when downloading I keep my upload at 50kbps. It's good to upload and it can improve your speed in many cases.

The other tabs you can use are the "Peers" tab to see all of the other people you are connected to and the speeds you're receiving/sending. If you're downloading a batch torrent with say, 12 anime episodes, you can go to the files tab and set higher priority to the first episodes so you get them first. Just right click to do this.

For your port setting, go to Options > Preferences > connection and set a port number (turn off the randomize port thing if it's on) I use 50137 and have that port opened in my router settings. Never had any problems.

There's some other settings like the DHT settings which some private sites prefer you to turn off, but that's probably not a problem for you. If you can't find the anime you want from Suki site then try tokyotosho/boxtorrents/nyaatorrents

For reviews you can probably use http://anidb.net/ and http://www.animenfo.com/

HF~

p.s. Shinsen-Subs (pretty good sub group) have just started subbing Kurozuka. I just finished watching the first episode and it seems pretty decent. I'm not really into the childish stuff of a lot of recent anime and this is a more darker/mature show I think. I recommend it =)

Thanks for the tips CaLeDee.

I seem to have got something downloading now but it seems almost dead. And it says it's 3gb.

As a beginner with listening I realistically probably only need one episode of something to work with at the moment.

Do you think there's a good torrent you could hook me up with?

If you mean RAW episodes with Japanese subtitles, then get this torrent: http://www.tokyotosho.com/details.php?id=103026 and get [LiouMing]Death Note[1-24].jap.ass.zip from http://kitsunekko.net/JapaneseAnimeSubtitles.aspx

(For subtitles to work this way you need to have the video and the subtitle file in the same folder and with the same name. e.g:

[darkside-raws]DEATH_NOTE_01_(704x396_DivX640).[2E733422] .avi file
[darkside-raws]DEATH_NOTE_01_(704x396_DivX640).[2E733422] .ssa file)

If it's just a random episode of Anime you want then I suggest~

Gintama for comedy: http://www.tokyotosho.com/details.php?id=163092
Kurozuka for a more mature theme: http://www.tokyotosho.com/details.php?id=164011
Elfen Lied for action/story: http://www.tokyotosho.com/details.php?id=132805

I could go on and on but that should be ok to start with.

If your having any problems with playback/subs then get K-Lite codec pack from: http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

I managed to download it, but I'm not sure what to do next (again). I clicked 'open' and it loaded Windows Media Player but all it played were the sounds and a colourful background (I think that the default for when no actual pictures are showing). What should I do?

Also, do you know where I can get the subs for this episode from?

OK sounds like you're having codec issues.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_...b09dbbd43/

Get that and install. Then open your video files with media player classic. The episode is already hardsubbed with English subtitles. Don't think anyone does Japanese subs for it.

You are probably missing the right codec to play the file. Google CCCP (or Combined Community Codec Pack). This pack contains all codecs you need to play almost any fansub release. Also includes two video players that works out of the box (they work better than Windows Media Player). The codecs are tested to work together without any problems, which is the usual problem with using other packs or installing each codec separately.

Great I got it working, thank you!

The only thing I need now is some anime with actual JP subs, not English or pure RAW. You've all already done enough for me but do you think you could link me to torrents of ever Neon Genesis Evangelion or .hack//SIGN?

Going by what I'd been told already it should probably be RAW to start off with, then I download and add the script?

I'll test around stuff before you replyeither way.

If anyone can find NGE or .hack too that'd be great. Smile
