Looks interesting. Just wondering how a sentence nub can fit these in at the moment.

Finding sentences using 四字熟語 can't be that hard, they are fairly popular. I know wikipedia has a few sentences for the most popular ones, though it's of course doubtful how good the sentences on wikipedia are.

Japanesepod101.com has free podcasts about these - I'm really enjoying them. They are mostly in English - the format is a dialog in English between Peter and Natsuko (usually) about the meanings and usages - but they include example sentences in Japanese pronounced by a native speaker. This week covers 大胆不敵 and 他人行儀.

I once added a frequency rating to the three-thousand odd 四字熟語 on Haitani's list (Kazelee's link, above), i.e. I rated them all from A to F where:

A = very common, nearly all Japanese adults know it
#
#
F = Nobody knows it

It's not perfect, but is still a useful guide. (If you want a copy of the file, email me)

For Example sentences with English translations, check out the following:

1) ALC approx 300 common 四字熟語

2) 118 四字熟語

For my own use, I compiled data from the above into single files.

Good stuff.

Did you compile these by hand or did you use some sort of program?

A mixture. I wrote a few scripts to help with some of the compiling. The frequency rating was done by a script.

鰹さん,could you possibly upload your file to somewhere like rapidshare where all members may download it? I know I would also benefit from such a file as I have been studying 4-letter compound idiomatic expressions somewhat haphazardly over the years so it would be good to see which ones I am missing from my deck (so to speak).

thanks is advanced

Did someone compiled the http://www.linkage-club.co.jp/Material/Jukugo.htm sentences?

The frequency rating should prove useful. The thing that has stopped me from really studying 4ji jukugo is knowing where to start. They aren't really something you encounter much of in daily life since the number in conversational use is probably around 10 or so, despite people knowing many more.

That's the one I linked to above. I called it "118 四字熟語" dictionary just because that's how many idioms are in it. (So you should already have that data in the file I sent).

Awesome stuff, especially the frequency ratings. I've been meaning to start adding these into my pile, but other than 一生懸命, I've also been a bit wary of adding these as well.

Man, if only there was a properly and thoroughly researched frequency dictionary of Japanese that I could find... I know there's that file from Jim Breen's site, but that's just a data dump from a few years' worth of newspapers. I haven't been able to find a frequency dictionary that goes through all media, and picks the top 5,000 words that will serve you best. I admit that KO does a great job at this, but I'd still like a real frequency dictionary.
