Are there any online or offline references that would go well with RtK3? I'm primarily looking for a way to easily look up the stroke order of some of the more confusing glyphs...

My good kanji dictionary (Kanji Learner's Dictionary) doesn't contain most of the glyphs in RtK3 so I'm looking for both web references and a good recommendation for dead-tree dictionary(s) that I can pick up that would contain most or all of the characters in Rtk3. I live in Japan so I'm sure there must be something out there that people here can recommend. Thanks.

Check Wakan. It includes stroke order and you can search by Heisig index. It also has several options that I hope you will find useful.

I've actually already read that post... Mainly, I'm wondering if there are any dictionaries with stroke order diagrams like the Kanji Learner's Dictionary that include most of the RtK 3 kanji. And/or any dictionaries to go to after one outgrows the KLD? With SKIP lookup and the like?

Wakan looks like it could be nice, but I don't boot into Windows very often so I'd rather have something I could use that isn't tied to a specific OS.

iirc this book has stroke diagrams. It's the big brother of the KLD.

Sorry to High-jack this thread... I recently came across the NTC NJECD ( Kanji learners big brother ) And it looks like a very comprehensive dictionary, other than Nelson boasting 7000+ where this has 4500~~ with 800~~ being directed to another Kanji as synonymous

I was wondering how anyone elses experience was with this "Tome" and whether I made the right move snatching it, or should return it opting for the Nelson.

How would you search for something using the stroke order?
You mean the order in which the primitives are layed down or what?

Or has it something to do with the number of strokes? Surely there are many kanji with the same amount of strokes.

oh, there is no searching using stroke order diagrams, they were just saying this book HAS a lot of stroke order diagrams. The Kanji search is using the SKIP system ( System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns ) This system uses the "Shape" type the kanji falls into as well as the total # of strokes in and outside the pattern.

Should be able to find good info on it if you search SKIP Kanji dictionary into google

The kanjidic_en.fpw.tar.gz file is a compressed archive, if you haven't done so already then you could try extracting the contents to your hard drive and then adding it. Perhaps I linked to the wrong file though I downloaded it quite a while ago, but you could try this one:

You can tell the format is correct (EPWING) if there's a "CATALOGS" file inside the root folder.

If you want a book on stroke order, I like this one by Sanseido:

漢字筆順ハンドブック 第２版正しくきれいな字を書くための

ISBN: 4-385-20074-2

It lists all kanji by on-yomi, then shows a variety of stroke orders for the kanji. The current "approved" order is usually marked with an asterisk (*), although older stroke orders and variants are also shown. It also covers older, obscure kanji, and non-joyo.

Obviously, it's all in Japanese, so it brings that factor to the party as well. It's also 588 yen, which is dirt cheap. Since it lists it all by on-yomi, it's also good practice for that as well.
