But you would have to leave your intermediate machine (in your case, the laptop) on, if you want to use your iPod Touch wirelessly.

It is cheaper in the short run, but you may need to take into account the cost of leaving a laptop on all the time or the inconvenience of turning it on and waiting for the boot every time you want to use iPod Touch wirelessly.

Since you have a laptop and an iPod Touch, I still recommend that you go and buy a wireless router. That way, you can use either one anywhere - I use mine in the bedroom or even in the ofuro, all the time...

See, mey apartment is REALLY, really freaking small. It's so small that I can use my laptop (almost) everywhere in my apartment with the calbe connection (!).

Furthermore, when I'm home, my laptop is on and I use the laptop to surf the web. I only need a wireless connection for my ipod to be able to sync Anki and maybe to set up and sync other programs. Other than that I don't see any reason to use the ipod to surf wireless when I'm home - I prefer to use my laptop then.

So in this case ... would it be better to NOT buy a router after all?

I still could try out the cheaper version first and if I figure it's too annoying, I still can buy a wireless router, right?

I'm just not sure if the described set-up really works. Gotta wait until my ipod arrives here in a few days to test it.

This question is for all of you who live in Japan and have an ipod/iphone:

My ipod touch arrived today (yay), but I have one problem. I wanted to register / create an account there, but as I live in Japan the ToU say that I'm only allowed to use the downloaded apps within Japan and not outside of the country. So what happens one I move back home again?
And the way bigger problem: they say I only can pay by credit card ... Japanese (!) credit card only that is.
I do have a credit card for my home country, but none in Japan.
Does that mean that I can't buy ANY applications?

You have a few choices:

1) Register your touch as if you were in your home country and use your home country credit card and credit card address. If you do this you will only be able to buy iTunes store content (including any app) that is available in your home country.

2) Get a Japanese credit card and go that route (its not as hard as you may have been led to believe I have 2)

3) Do both and manage 2 accounts on the same computer

Actually its not too late, it doesn't matter where you register your machine, only where you register your account. Open the itunes store of your home country and set up an account and you will be able to buy apps that will work on your touch.

So basically it seems to be possible to change your Apple ID information anytime.
Does that mean that I could register with a German addy + bank info right now and once I have a credit card can change it to a Japanese addy + bank info or ... that doesn't work?

You don't need a Japanese creditcard to open a Japanese iTunes account. Just go buy a Japanese prepaid iTunes card and use that. Many people have accounts in their home country and Japan through this method.

The ipod is really giving me a headache.
I've managed to set up an adhoc network. Tried ipconfig and everything seems to be fine. My ipod also finds the wifi and connects to it because I have the wifi symbol on my ipod then, but when I try to access the internet with my ipod it says it's not possible because I'm not connected to the internet.
Any idea what's still wrong?

You never setup internet sharing as was described earlier in the thread. Ad-hoc wireless is just the first step. Also, yes you can have your iPod authorized for 2 accounts just fine. Mine has Canada+Japan accounts.

I tried, but I don't have that there. My "advanced" settings there look different.
I even found a tutorial how you can change that advanced thingie, but even that didn't work because what they said that I had to change I also didn't have on my computer, so I really have no idea what to do anymore *sigh*

If you say yes to 1. and 2., it's just a matter of getting the Windows settings right.

I have Windows XP (I'm not sure if Professional or not) and the newest Service Pack (I'm not sure where I can look up my Windows version and yes I suck!)

Actually I just set up the gateway / ip address in my ipod and changed the proxy http to auto and now it works. I have no idea why, maybe somebody can tell me?

Now you can have fun buying from the AppStore wirelessly - the way it should be done...

Assuming XP is running some kind of DHCP as a router, the setup from the iPod Touch's side should automatic: you shouldn't even need to set up the gateway and the ip address. If that is the case (as it seems), you don't need to worry about setting proxies for each different type of service (like http, smtp, etc...).

The Easy Answer Is:

Proxy is a different way of getting your services.

The Detailed Answer Is:

Proxies work on a service-specific basis. For example, say you are in China and a site you often use is blocked. You can get around the block by accessing a Web Proxy which will take your URL as a request, get your data, and pass it back to you. Whereas in your case, the XP machine is just forwarding all packets - it doesn't care if it's for the web or what.

The end result is the same - it's just a different way of doing it.

So now I'm trying to set up iAnki, but it doesn't seem to work.
In the description it says: Once you've done this, 'iAnki Server' will be added to Anki's 'Plugins' menu (On older version of Anki it is added to the 'Tools' menu). Click 'iAnki Server' to run.

Under plugins I do have something that says "ianki" but that's it. I can't do anything with that plugin.

Then the next step is this, right?

So ... where do I have to set this up? In Anki? My lan-connection?

There is an incompatibility between the latest version of Anki and the iAnki that is out there.

Do a search on iAnki for all posts (not threads) and you should find a link/patch to a different iAnki to download. This came up just a few weeks back.

Once you use that one, you should see 'iAnki Server' as a menu choice.

I downloaded quite an old version of iAnki, but I still have the same problem :/

The problem isn't on Anki's side, per se - it was non-standard coding on iAnki's side.

That means iAnki may work with some versions of Anki, but may not work with others, regardless of how old the version may be.

If you are still having problems, please take it up with resolve or the anki BBS/forum.

About a month ago, seeing the stellar reviews for Kanji Flip, I bought the app.
Since then, I haven't used it at all - the reason is, if you have finished Heisig, you can recognize the Kanji already. What's more useful is learning the Jukugo, but unfortunately Kanji flip doesn't let you test Jukugo - it's useful just for the Kanji.

Yesterday, I downloaded a bare-bones app, Kanji (Lima Sky) for $0.99. This one has so few features (it doesn't even remember my previous spot on the deck) that it's a bit annoying, but its simple interface and the ability to test two readings per Kanji makes it well worth using as a next step beyond RTK1. I also find the GUI to be simpler and more pleasant than the gaudy Kanji Flip.

Kanji (Lima Sky) recommended for picking up 2 Jukugo/Vocabulary per Kanji, post RTK1.

so now I finally have the Anki Server, but now I suddenly can't connect to the internet with my ipod anymore. It says it's connected to the wifi, but when I try to open the browser it says it can't connect to it because I'm not connected to the internet. It's strange, because I didn't change my settings at all.
Any ideas? *sigh*

Nah, it's just that some things were renamed in Anki, and iAnki needed to reference the new names instead of the old ones.

Hopefully with Anki 1.0 things will stabilize more. Also I mentioned to Resolve the idea of having plugin auto-update, and he said after 1.0 is finished. That should reduce the fiddling necessary to get iAnki working.

Well, iAnki didn't use the init hook like almost every other plugin, but it's not really fair to say "non-standard coding" when there are no plugin docs available. There is no standard currently
