But you would have to leave your intermediate machine (in your case, the laptop) on, if you want to use your iPod Touch wirelessly.
It is cheaper in the short run, but you may need to take into account the cost of leaving a laptop on all the time or the inconvenience of turning it on and waiting for the boot every time you want to use iPod Touch wirelessly.
In this type of configuration, you will have an ethernet between your laptop and the modem, but your wireless will be on to talk to your iPod Touch. Wireless laptop and iPod Touch will be on one subnet (configurable), while the wired interface on your laptop will be on the internal subnet specified by your modem.
