Somebody really is mad they translated signs and stuff? And a five-year old watching the Disney channel is supposed to know what a Tanuki is? I dunno

It's such an odd feeling actually being able to recognize the kanji. For the first time I didn't feel completely lost and I was able to push through it (albeit slowly).Woodgar Wrote:Did you finish RTK1?tAiLdVaIlN Wrote:First Post. Hello everyone, I'm currently on 1300 and I've really been feeling the grind lately, reading this thread has really helped rekindle my motivation. Thanks everyone :pHave you been doing anything else besides RTK?
For myself, when I got to around 1600 I started looking through Tae Kim's grammar guide (http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar), and it was really encouraging to be able to recognise a lot of the Kanji used in the examples.
Thanks for the words of encouragement, I just need to make one last push to the end!

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I finally gathered the courage to make an account. I'm at 424. It's been about a month or two, I'm not really counting. I think I'm going at a rather chilled pace. I dunno'. It's been a long ride of easy, and it is becoming an up and down ride of difficulty since my depression started to kick in. I noticed it gets harder when you don't do it everyday, and my depression gets the better of me at times. One time I spent two weeks off because of how low I was, I hardly left the house to do anything other than work and do school. But I never want to do that again. I just need to stay focused and believe in myself.
I'm going to treat myself to sushi every 100 now, and I'm 24 past due.

After those 1300 (the 1000 of RtK Lite plus those left over from RtK Lite but being present in Genki) I stopped and I did Genki I in one month and exactly yesterday I begun Genki II. So I don't have much experience but I can reccomend you to do something beside RtK, if you're not already doing this. Something like Genki or Tae Kim or similar, do it with furigana for now, don't try to learn vocabulary, do it only to start being confortable with japanese grammar and the like. So when you finish RtK you are not starting real japanese from zero.

About depression, I feel you, but if there is something that can be antidepressive is to do what you enjoy, and to make progresses on it. For this reason I suggest you to start now with "real japanese" (if you're not doing it already), because RtK by itself is really depressing, so much work, so much time and at the end of it, apparently, you still don't know anything in japanese. But the benefits of RtK are real and you start to see it only when you get yourself in touch with real japanese. So don't be depressed, think of yourself another couple of months from now!
And I think to speak for everyone here, for every other thing you know this is a community, we have the same passion, so if you need to talk, you can count on us

Since that 2 weeks off, (the longest I ever stopped) I decided to add vocabulary I've come across into SRS along with RTK. I don't have much cards in vocab yet, because I just started it, but I've come across so many words since starting, it's about time I started memorizing them, even if it is slowly. I also needed to refresh my katakana so I added that too.FleetingMischief Wrote:Hi everyone, I'm new here. I finally gathered the courage to make an account. I'm at 424. I want to do more, I have Japanese for Busy People I, (unfortunately not Genki I) but RTK takes it out of me. I don't have much time between work and school. I think I'm just looking forward to the prospects of finishing RTK and starting to use kanji in context. I'm fine with just doing RTK for now.
Luckily I found myself a study buddy in real life, and honestly I would have quit at the 300's if it wasn't for him. If I get down again I'm sure he'll find a way to keep me going.
*Edit: I looked up Tae Kim, and I'm downloading his grammar guide into my iPad. It looks like a snazzy app. I'll take a look into it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Day 7. Learning: 113. Mature: 0.
I finished my Japanese class last Monday and was so disappointed with my retention for writing kanji that I began this book the same day. I was skeptical at first, and it took a while to get used to, but now I get it and am doing it full force.
I added a bunch today to Anki. And while I could continue to go thru more, I think that the repetitions in Anki would eventually get to me.

Just finished lesson 10! That's frame 249 for those who think in terms of frames
Last week I made a big push for new material. This morning I woke up and spent some time with Anki and realized that I'd retained a lot less that I expected. I expect to spend the next few days working on increasing my % correct before adding any new material.

I'm in the same boat, more or less. I've been doing a lesson every morning and every afternoon since Monday. Just finished the first part of the book today and I'm thinking of maybe taking another few days to really master the method before moving on, as it seems like it won't be long before Heisig stops feeding me stories.
Still though, feels good to have 294 kanji in my deck less than a week after starting.

Just caught up to the half-way point, roughly where I stopped last time when I took a Japanese hiatus. Now it's time to finish things.
