The problem is, you still have new due cards coming up and the cards you fail have extremely short intervals and it takes a while to get them up there. I do 200 or so a day on a good day (I can't study very much...), and once I reach 300 or so left I can generally pound through them. It's hard, but I can.

It's better to not burn out before you've gotten to where you can "start anew".

Made it to kanji # 1000 today. I'll take a short break and continue tomorrow.
Can't believe I made it this far - at my rate of 50-100 a day, I'm gonna be done in about two weeks Big Grin

BTW, anyone read the first comment on the kanji#1000? Was that a misleading joke?

Congrats.

He probably meant you'll be able to read like a native after RTK and a lot of study (RTK being the first step). Like a half joke, as a way to keep people focused on their goals. I don't understand why it's rated so much though (I personally don't really like the style of the contributions crystalcastlecreature made). You'll see far worse contributions, so you shouldn't really bother (or you can use the report button like G.O.D. intended).

I'm one week in, 220 Kanji down. I've devoted quite a large chunk of time to learning so far, probably more per Kanji than average, but I'm generally a slow learner and I'm pretty happy with my retention rate thus far, so I'm not going to complain. I think I'll probably slow down as I go on, I won't have this much free time forever. And I'm in no hurry.

I figure I'll give myself at least 6 months to get them all down, and even then I won't be disappointed if it takes me longer.

Fantastic!!!

Keep going all. I just got to 1880, and the delightful story is enough to keep me on to my goal of finishing this weekend!

Mind you, I need to not get distracted my the forum... @(・●・)@

I finished the sample PDF and am waiting for my RTK copy to arrive. I don't know if I'm doing this (the studying) correctly by just continuously reviewing the same roughly ~270 some kanji for a couple of days now, and its so hard to be motivated when not learning new kanji. I hope that copy arrives soon. Sad

You can use the stories on this site to help you move forward while you wait for heisig. I read through all of RTK1 but usually used this site for stories and improvements where Heisig is a bit dated.

I've received my copy the night I posted that post. Big Grin I'm really happy and now have blazed up to kanji # 395. And yes, I use this site whenever I find Heisig's explanations a bit confusing.

I finally started Heisig for the first time ever after scoffing at him and his methods, 155 kanji in after 2 days and I'm really starting to see how it works and go "hey, this is COOL!"

The one trouble I'm running into is remembering all the stupid different names of the primitives - how it's head in one story, page in another, etc, and it's tripping me up slightly. It normally takes one run through everything for me to remember, though, and I've kind of gotten into a system.

Hoping to blaze through it in 20 days total, so I can be done with it. Blech. Good thing I'm currently out of school with nothing to do. Wanna finish it before I start working.

I'm at around the same kanji # as you and what I do when I am in a "rut" is take a day off of adding new cards and just do the day's reviews.

Don't push yourself; stop adding new cards for a little bit.
Try staying on top or your reviews and do at least some (1 or more) every day.
This is substantially better than getting burned out and quitting completely, only to regret it a few months later. (happened to me, even tho I was sure it couldn't happen to me).
Thats what I got for trying too hard.
I was a hare, now I'm a tortoise.

What are some of the things that you do in Japanese? Can you go over your daily routine. They problem that I am having is finding fun things to do in Japanese

I can't really read a manga in Japanese yet so what I usually do is just spot the kanji and see if I remember (if I've learned it) them. I also study some grammar on the side with Japanese the Manga Way. It has sentences with kanji in it so I'm reinforcing the keywords I've learned. And I agree with Revenant's suggestion above of doing a little a day even if it's only 1 kanji. Better than nothing. I guess this is one of those cases where you must lose a battle to win the war? (Sorry if it's the wrong adage!!)

In a rut? Look forward to the day you can walk around Japan, read a textbook etc and hardly ever see a Kanji that you don't 'know'. Then it's just a case of adding some on yomi and Blast Off!!! Keep going! Less than 1000 left!

I just have a little question tho, as I'm german and have been learning japanese in english all the time... I dunno, I just let the keywords be and look up some real meanings in german on yamasa; basically the Kanji are associated to english keywords, but I also have a few german synonyms to it.
Am I doing it wrong?

Also... at 880 again, after having quit for several months. Back on track, slowly moving forward now.
