The Encouragement Thread

wemaydance Wrote:I found AJATT when first beginning my Japanese study, which in turn led me to here. AJATT was very helpful in terms of introducing the concepts of SRS and also pretty inspirational. I do SRS-ing, watching J-doramas. But true All Japanese All The Time, meaning tossing your bed for a mattress on the ground, throwing away your English language books, listening constantly to JP audio even while sleeping and conversing w/ people... I don't immerse myself to that degree!
I'd have to agree with you there! I'd like to say that I'm following the method: I've gotten rid of all the English content on my iPod (that was a painful switch, haha) and loaded it up with all sorts of Japanese audio, I'm studying the kanji, and I always keep a Japanese manga with me. I drew a couple of kanji posters for myself and put them on my bedroom wall, and bought a magazine just for the posters inside... I do all of the essential things, but I'm not about to sacrifice my bed, my forks, or my friends to study the language.

I'm really excited for the halfway mark. I'm on lesson 14 or 15. I skipped reviews for a week and remembered everything. [:

Yeah man just keep it up and stay consistant. Its great getting past part 2 but regardless of how fast you go if you stay consistant you'll get there. 1 a day is better than none a day. I'd suggest at least 5 a day though.

I agree. [:
I finished two lessons and had to stop myself 'cos I was really concerned I'd forget some stuff.

But I don't really know why its getting harder for me to remember, no matter how exciting the stories are, or how many times I write it or even just look at it. This only happens with new ones. ><

Yeah I have a couple of those. I changed the story i was using if it wasnt really sticking anyways. Like Intimidate still gets at me. Something about marching women. but I only know that because i got it wrong AGAIN today.

Aha, I came across that one today! It is indeed tricky. We'll get it! <:

You'll get it, that march of intimidating feminists!
I find that they take a little time, but those 'harder' ones have often become easy easy easy after time...

Having said that, 最近 時間がないので少しだけ勉強してしまたん。。。

I actually understood that "High fives".

This is one of my first post since I first registered but yeah... I'm at the 90% mark now(approximately 1800). Can't wait until I finish that book after over 8 months since I first started ^^. I get my reviews done everyday at least but it's very hard to juggle my University assignments & Japanese together. Oh well, gonna give it another stab now.

Your first post, but I see you are now up to 4 in total! This forum is quite addictive perhaps, but sure does encourage us to keep on with Heisig. It's not easy but certainly worth it. Another 20 kanjithis morning takes me to chapter34/56!!

Haha yeah this forum is quite addictive. I spend most of my time here slowly exploring the vast amount of knowledge here. There's so much that it's hard to remember what I've even read Tongue.

Anyway @the mid 1900s, too exhausted to continue for now ^^

Did Lesson 25 yesterday, and I've decided I'm going to do one lesson per day until I get to the end. Heisig says in the intro to L26 that it's all downhill after this.

Thats Funny I'm in lesson 25 right now and I just came to this post to post about how I'm not feeling motivated to do any Kanji today. I have a lot on my plate with midterms and Paperwork for study abroad etc. The way I've been doing it is going ahead of time and putting in stories i want to use before i officially review the card. However, I haven't put stories in the last few days and now I ran out of my reserve cards so I'm kind of tired of entering the stories more than anything.

I hope your right and it's downhill after this cuz that would be swell.

No no no no!

DO IT!

If not now, then never. Find the motivation and get back!

I hear you on the paper work! For a solid semester it seemed like every second of my free time was filled with one piece of paper work or another from essays to applications for scholarship and a student visa, to transfer papers for my university...UGH! It's no wonder many people give up on study abroad!

Don't do it. I have a ton of schoolwork last week and quit adding new cards after going at a fairly decent pace of 30 a day. Then it was really hard to get back into the habit of adding new ones. In fact, in this timespan I probably only added 20 new cards. Then just a few days ago I quit reviewing entirely. Not to mention I've been neglecting all my failed cards. So now I have a stack of about 80 failed cards and 300 due cards that I will probably end up failing most of them due to the lack of reviewing, and I'm have no motivation at all to go and do it. I am such a weak, weak, man. To come so far and LOSE EVERYTHING! Don't do it...at any cost...once you get in a rhythm that will be all that keeps you sane. Getting rid of it will throw you into the depths of despair.

This is my third attempt at the book and I'm not getting any younger. I know if I turn back now it is finished, I will never do it again. I guess when I hit 1k I viewed it as such a landmark I thought the rest would be a breeze, but then I realized I still have HALF OF THE ***** BOOK LEFT TO STUDY AND NOW I'M JUST ANGRY AND UNMOTIVATED. This method was probably pretty awesome back in the day heck even 5~10 years ago but now I feel with all the resources such as tlaggregator and jparser and rikaichan (sorry if I spelled them wrong) life would have been way easier to just jump right in and learn the kanji from seeing them so often. I wouldn't recommend this method to anyone. Maybe I'm just weak, but I can't imagine more than 10% of the people attempting this book complete it on the first attempt.

um that is awesome in its simplicity.

Here's a one-page 2011 calendar w/ convenient little boxes for Excel.

Oh man, I need to save a copy of that, because I know I read it before but I let the method slip (and I need to get a calendar).

I'm giving myself a rule that no matter what, even if things feel horribly busy and there's no possible time to spare, I'll still do one new frame. I haven't done only one frame so far. Frankly they seem a bit like potato chips or popcorn. Do one and you'll probably find yourself going on to the next one.

I am also finding that even when I don't get a kanji right from the keyword, that very often once I see the kanji I have an, "Aha! That's right! There story is..." moment.

At 260, with only 15 in the restudy stack.

Lately I've noticed something. I often tell myself I'll stop at the next primitive, but it always looks so interesting and so I keep going. When I get to the page after that it gets a little more difficult.

Anyway. I'm on like 410! Lesson 18 is huge. l:

&lol @ the calendar thing. I've been using a calendar to track progress. I'm not quite happy with my pace.

I obsess over theoretical dates that don't really matter. What matters is progress; not when the task is complete. At least not for this kind of thing. But I have a calender with a similar set up. SMILEY faces on good days a black square on bad days. So far there are no two days that have failed. Black Squares are intimidating and scary i don't like to see them.

This is a really good idea. I hate the color yellow, so I could put a huge yellow box or circle on the days I fail. It'll work. Now to find a horrendous shade of yellow. ~

My computer broke, so my Anki deck was stuck on it until I got a new computer and recovered the harddrive. Tons of due cards. ):

But I finally recovered and reviewed every single one of those cards. Big Grin
