So I'm probably going to need to switch to another SRS...

#1
As the title says, I'm probably going to have to switch to another SRS. I love the one on this site, and will probably still use it for the remainder of my time doing kanji with Heisig, however, in about a month I will be away for a week with no way of getting on the internet. The prospect alone is daunting, and when you combine that with how much review I'll miss... well, I tend to shudder.

So, my question comes as: what's the best? I assume anki, but I'll just make sure.

Second, if I chose anki, and use the heisig sample deck, is there a way to load my stats into anki? If so, how?

Part 2 to that is after I load my stats, if I can, is there a way to just review cards I've done and only add new ones from the deck to the review cycle after I've learned them? Or will it keep popping up new cards?

Finally, if there happens to be a way to load my stats to anki, can I load it back?

Well, thanks for the help! Hopefully I can make this switch quick and painless, and not have to miss out on a week's reviews.

Haha, I made a thread about srs's on devices other than computer (since im not going to be near the internet for most of my trip) , so if you have a palm or something, check it out.

Use the plugin here

It won't pop up new cards unless aren't paying attention.
In anki you have your failed, your up for review and your new categories. At the bottom of the screen you will see three numbers representing these three categories. red for failed, black for review, and blue for new. when you look at a card if it is a card in the failed category the red number will be underlined. same with the other categories. when you have done all the cards in the pile, the number will be 0. generally speaking, anki will do red first then black then blue (new). So when you see that you have done all your review cards, just stop and it won't pop up any more new cards.
Or you can suspend the new cards.
Hope that made sense. it is much easier to do it then to explain it.

To answer your first question, you can import all your review data from this site into Anki using a plugin that you can find here:

http://ichi2.net/anki/wiki/Plugins

It's about halfway down the page.

As for your second question, Anki works by showing you failed cards up for review first, followed by expired cards up for review, followed by new cards. So, once you're done with all your reviews, it'll show you new cards, but as soon as more cards expire it will show those instead. If you don't want to add new cards, you just don't do them until you're ready.

I don't know about going from Anki to this site, since I've never had any need to do anything like that. Someone else might be able to tell you. Maybe there's a Greasemonkey script that can do it, since I'm pretty sure that runs on magic.

Haha, Greasemonkey scripts run on magic, huh? Yeah I'd agree there!

And yes, it all makes sense. Thanks for the quick replies! Looks like I'll have something else to do this weekend.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong here? I've tried to install a plugin in ~/.anki/plugins/ on a Leopard system, but I can't get anki to recognize the fact for the life of me. There's no difference in the Deck/Import... menu at all...

Is there any special way to get anki to recognize a plugin installation that I'm missing?

I followed the installation instructions at the plugins page...

Save this Python file in your Anki plugins directory

Download the flashcard status file from http://kanji.koohii.com/status/export.php
# Start Anki. If the plugin has been successfully installed, you will see a it listed as a new import file type under Deck/Import. Additionally, if you started Anki through the command line, you will see 'kanji.koohii.com plugin loaded.' appear on standard output.

Hmm... I haven't tested the plugin on Leopard, but I assume things would work relatively the same there.

After installing the plugin, restart Anki. Select Deck/Import and this is what you should see:

Do you see the option `Progress from kanji.koohii.com (*.txt)' in the `type of file' section?

I discovered my problem through a lot of trial and error. Firefox wasn't getting the actual .py file when clicking on the wiki link that appeared to be an attachment. So what I was doing was accidentally downloading a javascript link and trying to give that to Anki as a plugin.

Eventually I found the correct file, downloaded it, and got it installed, but I'm still lost as to where to go with Anki, since the sample deck contains all of the RtK kanji and not just the ones I'm actually reviewing, leaving me in a situation where I can't really figure out what I should do to get on the right track.

Should I delete the cards/facts (I'm still not sure what the difference is in Anki; it's really confusing and unclear...) I haven't gotten to yet in RtK or is there some other way to segregate those and keep them separate from the cards I'm currently reviewing so that weird, unlearned kanji don't pop up in my reviews...?

I don't know. The documentation for Anki is killing me and although I've figured out a lot of what was greek to me at first about the program via various scattered internet postings, reviews, etc. I'm still not sure how to approach Anki or the best way to integrate it into my study.

I guess what I was hoping to do was to just import a file and have a new deck pop up in Anki that had all my RtK kanji cards from this site, along with their progress and my stories that I could sync up every week or so in case my internet (or this site) went south.

Now I'm not even sure what constitutes a "card" in Anki or how it measures progress or saves decks. I imported my progress and had something like 99 red cards even though my red cards here numbered only 71. There were also 226 reviewable cards according to Anki, even though here I had 0 reviewable cards. Not to mention the fact that my Anki deck is the sample deck, so it has something like 2000 extra cards that I haven't yet gotten to in RtK that I don't know what to do with.

So my main questions now are:

1. What do I do now? Is there anything I can read that might shed some light on my issues?

2. Is there anyway to import my stories from here into Anki and preserve the formatting?

Hello,

I'll answer your main questions first.

1) There are screen-casts on how to use Anki properly available on the main Anki page (http://ichi2.net/anki/). Just click on the big icons (Introduction, reviewing, etc) to view the corresponding screencast. I recommend watching all of them. Other questions, like `what is a card' are answered by the FAQ, which is also worth reading.

2) The import plugin doesn't import stories into Anki yet. I couldn't be bothered implementing that. Besides, if you click on the keyword while reviewing, the corresponding RevTK will be brought up in your web browser. There you can review all stories, not just your own.

Now, to your other questions.

If you don't want Anki to show cards you haven't reviewed yet, then you can suspend the cards you haven't reviewed. You can do this when editing the deck. You can also un-suspend cards in similar fashion.

Although they are both based on the Leitner system, Anki and RevTK handle scheduling differently, meaning that statistics such as reviewable cards may differ.

I hope I've answered your questions. Let me know if I've left anything out.

Cheers,
Misha

The screencasts (along with your reply here) cleared up a lot of my confusion surrounding Anki.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks for all the replies!

I'll most likely be making the switch next, next weekend, after I hit about 1100 or so. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

I just made the switch because I'll be away without internet for 10 days. I was kind of nervous considering there is no way to get the data back into the site. However, I do like the prospect of having all of my SRS items in one place. Also, I like being able to use iAnki on my iPhone.

I would like to be able to use iAnki for days at a time without computer access. I'm currently using the suspend method then unsuspending cards as I learn new kanji. However, I realize that you can also simply set "review new cards in the order they were added" and review the number of new cards corresponding to the amount of new kanji you learned for that day.

What I would like to know is whether it is possible to use iAnki away from my computer for several days with the ability to add new kanji. I don't think it is possible to unsuspend cards so I was hoping if I use the latter method it would work. Does anyone have any insight into this?

[EDIT]: It appears that I was able to apply the latter method. I unsuspended all of my cards and Anki (laptop) now shows the number of new cards to review at the bottom of the screen, 90 in my case. However, iAnki shows well over 90, presumably all of the possible new cards. I suppose this is fine if I review new cards in order, then I can just stop after I reach the last kanji I studied that day. However, does iAnki respect the study options set in desktop Anki? Specifically, "Show new cards in the order they were added?"

I got a problem with the connection at the stage of connecting my ipod touch
to the ianki server. everything else worked as a charm but I am stuck now since more than 2 hours inputting all dsn and ip addresses in both boxes on my mac and on my touch on the safari browser and it doesnt work.
my wifi is ok, I can open my web folder using my ip address so why it wont work with ianki?
here the extract from the website:

iAnki Server settings

Address: Set this to the IP of your network adapter, or leave as the default value to use default adapter. (default 0.0.0.0)
The easiest way to get this IP address is to run "ipconfig" It will be the IPv4 address.
Port: Set this to the port that the server will listen on. (default 8000)

With your device connected by WiFi, open Safari and browse to http://address:8000 where the IP address matches the computer that you have Anki running on. (The same IPv4 address from above)

I really tried everything and give up for today.
Anybody had similar problem on a mac?

@yo6shi9

You'll probably have a lot more success with your question if you post on the anki forum itself.

It's Leopard's new firewall. Go to System preferences > security > firewall. Then select the radio button for "set access for specific services and applications" Add anki to the list and allow incoming connections. Restart anki and try.

@kazelee and @snozle
thank you guys so much! it works now! it took less than 10 sec to get it to work and sync the deck!
it was really a simpla firewall problem.
I love this application! and because I have the ipod Touch and not the iPhone I cannot go online when I want, especially when I am on the road and no wifi is avalaible. so this is really a good alternative to the rtk website.
you made my day! Smile

Glad I could help. Apple changed the default firewall settings to be application specific rather than port specific with Leopard. It was a controversial move and it took me a while to realize that was what was causing my problem with iAnki.
