What methods have you guys been using to learn onyomi?

http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com describes the sentence method, although I will probably not use his exact method myself. I've yet to decide on what exact method I'm going to use, but I know it will involve sentence production (i.e., "Translate this sentence into Japanese").

In that case, I feel your pain. For that reason I will not make writing an extensive part of my sentence items. Notice I say "extensive"... I do plan to practice writing kanji, just probably not writing entire sentences at a time. Most likely what I'll do is take someone's advice of only physically writing down a sentence that I got wrong. Otherwise I'll just visualize the kanji rather than write them, or maybe just gloss over their writing with my palm and fingertip, which is what I currently do when reviewing Heisig. Of course, in visualizing the kanji I do still plan to visualize the entire kanji, because I learned the dangers of only paying attention to parts of kanji the hard way.

Alternatively -- or perhaps in combination with the above method -- I might simply have items that require me to write only a single word in kanji, though the word would still be taken from a sentence.

I have been picking up on- and kunyomi through reading, wherever there is yomigana. But to developer a strong skill set in this area, I've been doing the following:

1) I use http://www.kanjicafe.com/. It's a great tool that allows you to develop lists for quizzing, but also examine individual kanji, look at their readings etc.

2) I'm almost through with Heisig's RTK, so I've started using the following series of books.

http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Kanji-Book-V...4893580914.

I'm finding that I'm working through these very quickly. The whole set takes you through about 1000 Kanji.

Good luck
