frame 279 - crossing 辻

#1
what is the deal with frame 279? in the book it is just a cross ("ten"/"needle") on top of a "road", but in my windows font (i have tried a few different ones), it has an extra drop above the drop on the "road"

which way is correct? which way should i learn? does it matter? Smile

thanks.

Yeah, you see that double-drop-road every once in a while. I guess it's somekind of an old form or something.

I think drawing it like it appears in the book is the safest bet. I think I heard somewhere that that font was chosen because it's closest to the common handwritten form of the characters.

Someone with better info may correct!

You will see the double-drop road more often in older texts, my "Tu dien Han Viet" (Vietnamese-Hanzi Dictionary) shows only double drop roads and has none of the single drop roads. Of course, it was designed for studying much older texts.

This style of the road primitive is a good thing to take note of, but is not really necessary to study. There are some Kanji that always use the double drop form, but none encountered in RTK1, and they are usually written in Kana (uk). Either way you will be able to read, and have your writing be read by others, whether it's one drop or two.

yeah, i guessed something like that also, the thing that bothered me was that the road primitive is almost always 1 drop in the default windows japanese fonts, but the one for frame 279 comes up with 2 drops.

anyone know of a good, free, japanese ttf font so i can change my font Wink

thanks.

There's some fonts here.

Incidentally 辻 is not a Joyo kanji. Within the Joyo kanji the "road" primitive is standardized with one "drop"; outside there is more variation.

Thanks. I want to try to figure out how to change the default Japanese font that Firefox 3 uses. It's almost unreadable unless I blow it WAY up.

For changing fonts in Firefox:

Tools>Options>Content

Under "Fonts and Colours" go to "Advanced". You can change everything there, including font and size.

Hope that helps
