I heard this from my Japanese tutor last night and I thought I would pass it along to those who might not know. Apparently there are some changes in store for the JLPT. She told me it will be twice a year from next year. From the link it seems that there will finally be something between levels 3 and 2 as well.

Really hope a test content specification for this comes out soon, can't wait to see how big the Pre-2 Vocabulary list is and the grammar points, hopefully JLPT study page gets updated.
