I m currently looking for thematic vocabulary list : kitchen utensils , fishes ,etc... . Electronic version would be way better but if it can t be avoided then I can type it ...
Right now I found only 2 things close enough :
- flashcard exchanges . But the list are really short most of the time
- stackz : but for one part even if there must be a way I m not totally sure I can export it easily under a text file or a spreedsheat I could import in anki , for other part the most interesting thematic list are in german . http://www.stackz.com/Stackz/Archive/Arc...BasedLists

Fish are probably one of the hardest topics to memorize, so I'd skip that one for awhile Most Japanese people can't even remember the kanji for any fish except for a few common ones.

Fishes are of course a bit extreme .... right now I would be more interested by lists of shops , jobs , utensils ,etc...

I'm not aware of any electronic lists, but good phrase books usually have themed lists of common words and can usually be picked up really cheaply. Of course, you've then got to type or scan them all in...

I noticed recently that one of the phrase books came with a CD, so if you could get some kind of auto-splicer to extract the audio too. Here...

ALC have a themed sentence database with 50 different topics and 2,800 sentences altogether. (I compiled them into a single document for my own use).

I found some ESL picture dictionaries at the library one time...they have tons of those thematic words. It sounds good on the covers...like, 3000 words, but in the end it's about 2500 words I'll never need ^_^;
