Flying Witch!

#1
Ahh, I just discovered this (current season) Anime, and I'm really enjoying it.
It's a tranquil, slice-of-life sort of show that reminds me a whole lot of のんのんびより.

If you don't know のんのんびより, you should Smile It's a slice-of-life show about some kids (all girls except for the one brother who is mostly excluded from what the main characters are doing, with a couple exceptions) who are living in an extremely tiny and remote village. If you like Yotsubato! (the popular beginner's manga) you'll like this show too.

I can't say as much about Flying Witch being only two episodes into it (I'm not going to try to write the correct title... it's just hiragana spelling of the English words anyway). However, so far it has that same kind of warm, personal feeling and the story is more a series a quirky little incidents than any grand adventure. Unlike Yotsuba or Nonnon, this show has some supernatural elements.

Perhaps this show has more potential to get a little more plot-driven, I don't know yet, ... There is some sense of the plot building up to something anyway. But it doesn't need to... I'm happy with it just for given glimpses into these characters lives.

From a learner's perspective, all of these titles I've mentioned are excellent learner's material. They use a lot of everyday language that you've already learned, showing the details of the kinds of scenes that are often glossed over or omitted in grander more plot-and-action driven stories. This current show, of course, also has some vocabulary overlap with Harry Potter if you're among those who are learning from the translation of that series.

Like most of what I watch, this show is on crunchyroll.com, can be viewed for free with commercials. I haven't tried watching it while logged out, but you probably need a subscription for high definition or to be able to turn off (or change the language of) the English subtitles.

(I did notice though that you can turn off subtitles on some Netflix shows now though, which is cool. A lot of what they have though is stuff that is now on DVD that I've already seen on Crunchyroll simulcast, but w/e, having alternatives is good, and they do have some non-overlapping titles... probably the ones that were on hulu(funimation), a site I've been neglecting. Well, there I go digressing again.)

TL,DR: Watch Flying Witch!

You'd like Amanchu.

It'll start airing soon.

And as far as that goes ARIA.

Thanks for the recommendation! I actually enjoy using slice of life as study material. Total late train, but Youkai watch is pretty slice too (with the exception of the Youkai of course) as Keita is pretty much a normal Japanese kid.

[EDIT]
You can also watch here: http://freemovienavianime.blog.fc2.com/b...-5913.html

After choosing an episode number, you can choose the hosting site. I recommend B9.

Thanks Chris. I just added のんのんびより to my crunchy roll queue. I've been looking to branch out past shirokuma for a while now. AND OMG THIS SERIES SEEMS TO NOT HAVE ANY TALKING ANIMALS! WILL I BE ABLE TO HACK IT?

For those who are searching for it, crunchy roll seems to only have it under the english spelling of "non non biyori".

Thanks! I've started watching - it's great, and seems very accessible in terms of Japanese level.

For slice of life fans, I recommend たりたり, which is also on CrunchyRoll. Well timed subs also exist on Kitsunekko.

I haven't started watching it yet, but I've been excited for this to come out (love the manga)!
I've really been out of the anime loop, so I can't really recommend anything.

Oh yes, たりたり was good (and easy to follow). Kind of different from the shows I listed, but kind of the same in some ways. I feel like 部活 is kind of its own genre (or is that just getting way too specific? Still they do have a similarity).

I'll have to check out Amanchu, ARIA, and Youkai Watch, thanks for the recommendations!

You're welcome!
Yes, crunchyroll's Japanese support is oddly lacking. I used to have my crunchyroll in Japanese with all the anime titles and synopses in Japanese, but there no longer seems to be that option... or at least I can't find it.

Anyway, there may just be a space or a ・ or both somewhere in their version of the Japanese title though making it hard to search, I don't know.

In any case, there's also a Non Non Biyori Repeat, which takes place concurrently with the timeline of Non Non Biyori, just showing different slices of their lives. (The first episode of Repeat is before the first episode of the original, we know because of when Renge has her first day of first grade.) I don't know if it would be worth the effort or even make sense to alternately watch episodes from the two seasons, but I thought I'd mention it. (I expect I'll rewatch both seasons as alternating episodes at some point).

Oh, and I've watched a couple more episodes of Flying Witch. It continues to deliver. Smile

It feels similar to me, though I can see why there are folks who can't get into 部活. For たりたり, I felt like there was a real focus on the character's lives outside of school that helped it transcend its genre somewhat.

Now if we're talking sports anime, that's a TOTALLY different genre. ;-)

I saw the first episode of Flying Witch this afternoon. I'm surprised I understood about half without any subs. Will have to do a 2nd watchthrough to figure out what I missed.

Is it just me or does it sorta feel like Harry Potter but Japanese? Especially the scene in the field reminded me of this scene in Harry Potter:

If we are talking sports anime, I recommend Baby Steps. It's about an honor student who decides to start playing tennis for exercise but later turns into a passion. This series is the reason why I'm obsessed with Campus notebooks (advertising at its finest).

Heh, I'm sure the show has been influenced by Harry Potter especially there. It's hard for a witch themed show not to be influenced by Harry Potter! (The cry of the mandrake was an already existing myth before Harry Potter... many things in Harry Potter already existed in myths and fairy tales, but picking out that -particular- myth was probably influenced by HP.)

The show reminds me a little of Kiki's Delivery Service too. I haven't seen too many other witch-themed Anime, but they do exist and some of those were probably also influences.
