@roketzu Can you provide some details about how the audio would work? Also, regarding not numbering the definitions, I can certainly make that an option, but isn't it almost impossible to parse the different meanings visually? Especially for common words like する?
Yessir, I think the audio could work in a similar way to how Rikaisama handles it, where if you hover over a word you can press a key (F) to hear that audio spoken by a native speaker. I believe there are tens of thousands of words covered, but I'll use 日本語 as an example.
If you search for 日本語 on
http://www.edrdg.org/cgi-bin/wwwjdic/wwwjdic?1C you'll see this as a result:
If you click that blue arrow you will hear
this. I think it should be possible for you to provide a small play button icon in your popup that links to the audio for the word when it is available on the JDIC site, as it is for 日本語 here. As for importing that audio, I believe Rikaisama handles this very nicely. It will automatically download the .mp3 file, rename it, and then drop it into your collection.media folder. It looks something like this:
(doing this has led to me discovering that the bit rate for the audio must have been changed at some point)
So now when your note comes up for review in Anki you can hear the audio of it being spoken, if it is available that is. I've found it is available the majority of the time!
With regard to the numbered entries each getting an individual line and readability, I can only really speak from personal experience as someone who has been making and reviewing Anki notes for 5 years now. I've never really found it difficult to parse and actually find it to look a lot neater.
I like having it all visible on one screen like this, and in some cases listing each meaning in its own line would hinder the ability to look over everything at once. Of course this could be a purely individual preference on my part, I'm sure if I had been using this method of definition layout from the beginning I'd probably prefer it. I might have even taken the time to match up the numbers with the Japanese definitions and usage examples I try to have on every note. (Oh what could have been...) . Anyway, I just thought I'd bring it up as something to allow as an option.
Hope I properly explained what I meant with the whole audio thing. Thanks for listening!
Darn tootin'. You know now I'm trying to think of a way I can take my whole collection and have the definitions regenerated in the format of JMDict. Do you happen to know of a tool out there that would make this possible? I load in roughly 40k words and it gives me an output file with a definition field I can use to overwrite my current field in Anki?
Epwing2Anki supports EDICT but not JMDICT -- Sufferin' Succotash!
