Hi all, I'm new to the forum, I did do a brief search about my question but I wanted your opinion on my specific issues.

So a few weeks back I started using RTK1 6th edition on the suggestion of a friend, and it was definitely something of a revelation. I started using Anki and a shared deck called "Heisig's Remember the Kanji 1-3 w/top2 community stories". 

I've now just reached "Part Three" of the book (547 kanji), and I decided to spend some time reviewing the ones I already knew before moving on to part three. 

The problem I've run into however, is that the Anki deck I named above seems to be based on the old versions of RTK1, and therefore the order of characters is wrong, as well as some being missing entirely. 
This wasn't much of a problem at first, but as I've learnt more and more the issue has snowballed, and will only continue to do so. Whenever I learn say, 20 new kanji, and add 20 more to my learning list, its never the same 20 as I just learned. So, I'm at a stage now where I've never reviewed some kanji, but I don't know which they are without going through all 547 with the book in hand and figuring that out.

I found another deck, called "All in one kanji - RTK order (new edition)” which seems to match the 6th edition ordering and list. However, for some reason it shows the kanji first, and pressing space gives me the English meaning, which is the total opposite to how I've been using the flashcards and also the opposite of what makes sense to me. I tried editing the deck to remove the "recognition" cards and leave only the "recall" cards (which are the correct way around), but this seemed to delete some cards entirely for a reason I don't understand, for example 勺 was missing after I did this which is a simple character, but who knows what else could have been deleted.

I realise that's a long and overly complicated backstory, but does anyone know of any Anki decks that have all the kanji from RTK1 6th edition, in the correct order, and shows the English meaning first and reveals the kanji character on pressing space bar? Or if not, what could I do with my existing decks to sort the problem? Or some other method?
The original deck I have has months of my learning stats on, but as mentioned some kanji have simply never been shown because the order is wrong, or are simply not included in the deck at all. The new deck I have seems to match the new RTK order but the cards are "mirrored" and I don't seem to be able to fix it.

If this has been answered elsewhere, please feel free to delete my thread and link me to the place with the answer. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

The anki deck file is no longer working but you can easily make your own with the data OP provides. Hope this helps.

EDIT: What did you mean by "mirrored"? Is your RTK deck recognition cards? You can easily just change the format in the cards section. Switch them like I did below:

I had a look at the thread you linked but there also seem to be problems with the information there in that the translations differ to the book, and also the python script that was linked in the thread doesn't seem to work for me (gives an error message when Anki loads).

The other deck I have, there are two versions of each card, a recognition and a recall card:


When I study the deck it only shows me the recognition card (the kanji, with the info on the other side). 

This is of no use to me; I want to see the English at first and then the answer be the kanji along with the info like pronunciation/story etc. 

However I do not seem to be able to delete the recognition cards properly.

Switching the card format like you said is no use either because the reverse of these cards also shows the kanji:



Also, some cards only have a recognition card (with missing data) and no recall card:

The highlighted card above is 亘, "span". I can add the missing translation in but I don't know how to create a recall card, which seems to be the one I'm after. I'm basically only interested in the recall cards, as I'm using this as a way to test my recall and ability to draw the kanji, not as a way to learn them initially.

Apologies for all the images but I hope it gets across my problem. I also appreciate this isn't your card set so thank you for trying to help me out!

I want a set of cards which match RTK exactly, in terms of translations, order, etc. which display the English translation firstly, then show the kanji along with the story/pronunciation on the reverse. 
If there are none available, I'll just have to learn how to use Anki properly and make my own set I suppose. Thanks again.

I see. Well you can add new cards and on the top left where it says "Type", click on the rectangle next to it (which I assume is default recognition), a popup should come up. It is there where you choose recall. You can make sure that it's working by checking the cards section and see if it indeed previews as a recall type card.

Try the RTK shared Anki deck I posted. It has Vol 1 Ed 6 frames 1–2200, plus Vol 3 Ed 3 frames 2201–3000. Corrections from the latest published errata have been applied.

This looks like it might be just what I was after, thank you! This deck is the 2nd from last result for "Remembering the kanji" on Ankiweb.net, I guess because it doesn't have any ratings yet. If it turns out to be what I'm after I'll vote it up so more people can see it, because I've been through about a dozen decks today and none of them were correct.

Hi, I've just stumbled across this forum recently, and it looks like there is a lot of really useful information here. I'm about 60% of the way through 'Nihongo Shark's' 2,200-card kanji deck based on the Heisig RTK method, and so far my stats are 97.6/83.9/83.12 for New/Learning/Mature cards respectively. I'm not sure if that's normal, but it seems ok to me.

However, it's definitely getting harder, and one thing that is starting to bug me is that I've noticed that my "New" cards don't re-appear for around three days after I have first "seen" them in the deck for the first time. I'm finding that three days is just too long a period for me now, as I frequently forget many of them by this point.

Ideally, I'd like to see them again on day two or even get to review them again later in day one, but I don't know which anki parameter(s) I need to be changing in the deck "options" tab to do this. My anki deck has obviously been set up like this from the start, but I'm guessing it wasn't so much of an issue when I had far fewer cards to remember.

Could someone give me some advice please? I'm sure it's very simple, but I'd really appreciate some help.

Those are ridiculously high statistics, so honestly, I don't think you should worry about it at all.  Just keep doing what you're doing, you're already doing better than almost everyone else according to those numbers. While there certainly are values that can be tweaked, doing extra reviews when you're above 70% retention is really only wasting your time... and you're over 80% retention so... yeah, just keep going.

I think I may have gone some way in answering my own question this morning, as I have finally figured out what the number of "steps" means when referring to a "new" card graduating to a "learning" card. I figure if I tweak that parameter a little bit and add another couple of "steps", it will probably achieve what I want anki to do. Unless someone else has a better suggestion? (I'd classify myself as a novice anki user). But from what you're saying, I seem to be doing ok, so I won't do anything too drastic.

I think my "new" card stats are maybe a bit misleading, as I've been running with two "steps" of 1 and 10 minutes before it goes into the "learning" pile, so I think most people would probably remember a card within that short span of time. But anyway, thanks for the encouragement and I will keep pushing on.

Yeah, you can run more steps if you want to. I think I run something like '5 20 20 20' because I run with 10 minute time-boxes, so I don't actually intend to study the card every 20 minutes but rather push it out until whenever I get back to Anki, which might be a few hours later or might be the next day. (If I keep hitting 'continue' of course, it will show up every 20 minutes but I don't usually do that.)
